EVANGELICALS WILL HAVE A HUGE BITTER PILL TO SWALLOW BEFORE THEY CAN ACCEPT CALLISTA GINGRICH AS A POTENTIAL FIRST LADY
Okay, first of all, it ain’t gonna happen. Newt Gingrich won’t be the nominee of the GOP. The only question is how long after tonight’s ABC News airs the interview with Marianne Ginther does he decide to stay in the race.
Now that that glaringly likely event is out of the way I have to say this. I’ve gotten numerous recent e-mails about how anti-Catholic my posts and those of The Boss appear to be. I’m no more an anti-Catholic than The Boss is. What we are, however, are ardent anti-hypocrites. Both Mr Gingrich and the Ms Gingrich 3.0 quite appently are. I am aware of his conversion to Roman Catholicism after seven years of marriage to Callista Bisek but I am also aware that the religion of Rome does not allow for you to commit adultery. This makes them both hypocrites in my opinion.
And now evangelical conservatives in America of voting age, a bloc that could number as many as 15 million, depending on which poll you believe, have to accept a man as a candidate for their political party, the GOP, who is known to have converted to the religion of the second woman he is known to have commited adultery with. This is absurd at best, politically ruinous at worst for evangelical conservatives who have nowhere and no one to run to in 2012. Thomas Bradley, who became Mayor of Los Angeles in 1973 has become famous yet again by the reference to the “Bradley moment” the notion that a voter has to check their innermost feelings about a candidate for one reason or another in the voting booth after expressing deep support in public. Now in South Carolina evangelical conservatives have their “Gingrich moment” when they have to decide if they trust a man who has so openly scoffed at their religious and cultural values.
The de facto leader of evangelical conservatives in The United States, Dr James Dobson had this to say about Callista Gingrich via a source quoted at Politico.com:
“[He said,] ‘I want to tell you that I’ve gotten to know Karen [Santorum] and she is just lovely. She set aside two professional careers to raise these seven children. She would make a fabulous first lady role model. And Newt Gingrich’s wife, she was a mistress for eight years.”
That comment makes the pill even more coarse and bitter.
