In the same week that North Carolina effectively seceeded from the Union with its retrograde vote to ban marriages between homosexual couples constitutionally President Obama made public his views on same sex marriage. For the first time in US history, a President stated that he supported gay marriage. This is a watershed moment especially since it comes in an election year.

To go on television and state that everyone has a right to marriage equality is a clear and tectonic shift in a country that still to this day has a difficult time with its own character. I was made very proud that I was once an American by the President’s words. Some like Andrew Sullivan was moved to tears because his President had recognized him and the love he has for his partner as equal to anyone else. Sullivan said, in an interview with NPR’s Audie Cornish, “I watched the interview and the tears flooded. There is something about hearing your president affirm your humanity that you don’t know what effect it has until you hear it. And I think of all those gay Americans over the centuries who never heard that, never believed it could happen. And I have to say I’m immensely proud of this president for doing what he did.”

There are those who are dancing in the streets right now I am sure and will continue to dance right up to and beyond the November election. Is this equal to or greater than the Stonewall Riots that launched the gay rights movement in the 1970s? Only time will tell. But let me say this clearly to the tens of millions of TEA Party loving, religious conservative bigots who would never be swayed to vote for President Obama no matter what he did because they perceive him and his politics as either, foreign to their worldview, or the man himself because of his skin color as not qualified to protect their freedoms because of some conspiracy against them that has long eluded the MSM. This is the day that you lost. Your over 400 year reign of tyranny over those in the minority who have sought nothing more than a place at the table is at an end. Enjoy your bashing of President Barack Hussein Obama over the next five years because now he is certain to be reelected.

Not to worry conservatives you will still have Rush Limbaugh [for awhile] and his misogyny, World Net Daily’s rotating screed about birth certificates and all those nasty rumors about President Obama to keep you warm on those fearful nights as America moves forward into the 21st Century. GLBTQ people are Human Beings with the same dreams and sorrows as you and we all deserve the same basic Human Rights and one of those is the right to marry the person we love. In the end it is really that simple. To paraphrase, Bob Dylan, “You don’t need to be a Weatherman to know which way the winds blows.”

Thank you Mr President.
