I am all the things the Conservatives today loathe. I am a strong independent feminist, a community activist, a rational thinker, a pragmatist. I believe in the inherent right of a woman to determine what she does or does not do with her body. I am a Progressive.

News is a business that I thought I would never enter into. I prefer the rough and tumble of politics to the often times rigid nature of getting the facts to press. When I was asked to come here to write editorials about the decaying ability of Americans to set aside their Culture War differences to solve the problems of the moment I could not pass up the chance to have such a bully pulpit.

In both endeavors, press and politics, information is power. The most important thing whether one is polling the likely voters or writing an investigative story is getting one’s facts in order. That partisan idological blogs get the facts wrong sometimes at best or outright obscure the truth at worst is nothing new. As a Progressive dealing with those who are thrown into a huff by mentioning that the level of anger and vitriol has gone up considerbly since the election of the first American President of color has become increasingly more and more difficult. This is because no matter how skewed the facts the Right gets from its “news” sources unlike rational persons of all stripes, Conservatives can’t think for themselves on matters political when they feel they must “win.”

Think for a moment of the top ten sources of Conservative political and social “news” for the average joe in the street. Rush Limbaugh both online and over the radio airwaves comes to most Progressive’s minds first. But of course that’s not the only source. Some of the more religious of those in the base of the Right prefer Glenn Beck’s The Blaze, or Jim Hoft’s Gateway Pundit. If you begin your day early in the morning you can predict with a reasonable measure of certainty what the Right’s meme will be for the day by visiting a handful of blogs and reading the Drudge Report. Andrew Breitbart’s untimely death came as a shock to Conservative blog readers and points out the nature of the Conservative mind; yet Big Government roars on without him.

The Right is easily stunned into inaction by changes to their status quo. They are not students of history they are manufacturers of revisionism. To the Right things have to fit into their proper place and their is no room for thinking out of the box lest ye slide down the slippery slope of realization that the world isn’t really as they see it.

I get my news from newspapers of record and from the Associated Press, Pressju Hellac, National Public Radio and Reuters. I have never been to the DailyKos or Democratic Underground seeking hard data that I would repeat online. Diversity in ideas is important so from time to time I venture to the above Conservative sites and Fox Nation to see what’s happening from their point of view. Lack of diversity is why Jim Hoft can post this suspect article and have it be repeated across the Internet in comments at other blogs. Simply because it makes the President look bad therefore it must be true. There is little depth in thinking among Conservatives the same lot who still insist despite all the evidence to the contrary that there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.
