DOES THE RYAN CHOICE AS VP SIGNAL THE END OF BOB MCDONNELL’S NATIONAL POLITICAL CAREER?

As you know Mitt Romney has chosen Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan as his running mate. The news came out, via a smartphone app, after Romney’s trip through a major swing state the Commonwealth of Virginia in the city of Norfolk. The news of the announcement made me wonder what this mean for Virginia’s governor Bob McDonnell and his national political aspirations.

There was no question the McDonnell is a rising star within the GOP as Ryan is. The difference between the two conservatives is that McDonnell, in late February of this year, committed the cardinal sin to the conservative base. Governor McDonnell at the time was awaiting a bill from the Virginia General Assembly that would have require a woman in that state seeking an abortion to undergo a transvaginal ultrasound. McDonnell supported this position and the bill to the joy of the conservative base. There was quite an outcry against this procedure from pro-choice and women’s health groups and McDonnell went against his Christian conervative base on 22 February 2012 deciding that the procedure, which was not medically necessary, was an intrusion by the state into the bodies of Virginia’s female population.

This was the date where McDonnell lost his shot at becoming the VP. In the future this decision will be used against him if he runs for the US Senate by the TEA Party conservatives for sure. I can’t imagine this issue going away even when the TEA Party falls out of favor after the 2016 election the establishment GOP will remeber that Governor McDonnell’s success in Virginia in regard to unemployment went against the mantra that Obama was ruining the employment prospects during the 2012 campaign.
