There’s a reason folks why there’s a federal government in the United States of America. Once upon a time the power of the federal government was needed to protect citizens that were unable to achieve equal status because of race. Today, in 2012, the bigotry from conservatives has not changed it has only shifted focus.

Yesterday Arizona Governor Jan Brewer signed an executive order to deny undocumented young people covered by President Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program a driver’s license or any other taxpayer funded service. Brewer feels she is standing on the law as it is illegal for an undocumented person to obtain a driver’s license in the state.

Brewer’s need to cater to the conservative base that want undocumented labor to work for them so they can become wealthier but do not want these same hardworking people to enjoy the full benefits of their labor is destined to backfire. For one, it isn’t helping Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan as they try to convince Latino voters that they mean them no harm. Equally it isn’t helping Arizona’s reputation nationally or internationally as a state where one wants to do business. Finally it’s very likely that the Obama administration will flex its federal immigration muscles and declare that those registered under the DACA have a special non-visa immigrant status and because of due process of law have every right to obtain a license to drive.

In Hindsight

The far Right in the flyover states might love the actions of Jan Brewer but it doesn’t help the conservative cause at all. Brewer has made the decision, like George Wallace did to stand for white rights over all others; she is fighting for this moment for “her people.” What brewer forgets is that in time, and it will be a very short time politically, the nation will become more brown than it is white and more Spanish speaking than English speaking. That day will come after Brewer is gone and replaced with a Diaz, a Santos, a Garcia or a Lopez. Actions like this executive order nearly assures that this Latina governor will have a D after their name.
