A few short days ago I thought this post would be about Sarah Palin crashing the GOP convention set to begin next Monday in Tampa, Florida. Now 72 hours after Rep. Todd Akin strapped a grenade to his foot stuffed them in his mouth and pulled the pin the only thing people in politics are talking about– on the Right and the Left– are what will be done about Todd Akin. As my good friend Fred Schwartz wrote most eloquently in his last post this is a story that can only do more and more damage to the GOP as it runs on and on in the MSM. This time last week Republicans were all a-titter about Paul Ryan and what he would do to help Mitt Romney’s image going into the November election. Today they are watching as the far Right members of their base do the one thing the establishment has told them a million times not to do– speak from their hearts about culture war issues during a presidential election year.

Hurricane Todd was a category 4 at least and has done more damage to the GOP brand than Katrina did to the Superdome and the political career of Mike Brown. Now there’s an acutal tropical storm bearing down on Tampa–Isaac. Now this could be a big win win for the GOP. If things get out of hand and FEMA doesn’t do a good job responding to the disaster this could be ammunition for them to use against President Obama. Oh, wait, the Obama Administration actually has a professional emergency manager with over 2 decades of emergency management experience at the head of FEMA? Well, maybe Pat Robertson can pray this hurricane away.

Before I go I’d like to comment on something a guy I really enjoy watching on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, Mike Barnicle, said about Mitt Romney. Barnicle said that Romney should use his acceptance speech in Tampa be clear and precise on this Akin matter by expressing his anger at the statements Akin made not the semantics of the issue and tell the rogue congressman that he must leave this race. Once again Barnicle gives Romney the sort of advice he needs but of course there’s that Bible and gun loving base that keeps the GOP in chains.
