I read both of these stories in the last few days and they are the very essence of the ideological divide among the common people in America. I really don’t believe the elites that go to Washington really give a shit about most of the petty social things that American voters care about. Why should they? Most of them are wealthy professional people who are now “connected” and can leave their cake public service job by taking their place at the lobbying professional influence trough. Even members of Congress who are ushered out in some sort of 1950s styled shaming disgrace of an affair end up landing comfortably on their golden parachute. Look at Eliot Spitzer and dare I even mention how great a political failure former Alaska Governor and now multimillionaire Sarah Palin is? And then there’s Bill Clinton who became the first presidential victim of the technological age by having his oral dalliances sprayed all over the Internet by Drudge and Co. No, none of the elites are perfect but they don’t give a fuck about abortion or gay marriage that’s for the hoi polloi to argue about which distracts you from what they’re really doing.

In Red Hook, New York at the Linden Avenue Middle School students were asked to role play about issues that could lead to bullying as well as sessions that strove to break stereotypes and empower all gender identities in youth. In one role playing session two girls were asked to come up to the front of the class and pretend to be lesbians on a date. One girl was asked to ask the other girl for a kiss and this was supposed to be an empowerment lesson on how to say no. Of course Conservatives haven’t the depth in their minds or Souls to be able to realize this all they see is that middle school children are being taught about homosexuality. Well I wish they were that erudite. This from Chelsea Schilling at one of my favorite pits of batshit craziness WorldNeDaily. There’s a trend in her writing see if you can pick it up:

“Outraged parents say a New York middle school instructed young female students to ask one another for a lesbian kiss – and boys learned how to spot young sluts – in an anti-bullying presentation on gender identity and sexual orientation, according to Fox News’ Todd Starnes.”

Some of the young female students said they were told it was common for 14-year-old girls to have sex and their parents couldn’t stop them.

Mandy Coon, a mother of an eighth-grade student said, “I am furious. I am her parent. Where does anyone get the right to tell her that it’s OK for her to have sex?”

According to Fox News, Coon said her daughter was distressed by the presentation and wondered why she’d been required to ask another girl to kiss her.

“She told me, ‘Mom, we all get teased and picked on enough – now I’m going to be called a lesbian because I had to ask another girl if I could kiss her,’” Coon said.

According to the mother, the school said the lesson was meant to “teach girls boundaries and how to say no.”

“They also picked two girls to stand in front of the class and pretend they were lesbians on a date,” Coons said.

Parent Tara Burns told Fox News, “The school is overstepping its bounds in not notifying parents first and giving us the choice. I thought it was very inappropriate. That kind of instruction is best left up to the parents.”

Parents of middle-school boys were outraged by the school’s lessons on condom usage and determining whether a girl is a slut.

“I was absolutely furious – really furious,” said one parent of a 13-year-old boy. “They were teaching the boys how to decipher if a girl is a slut.”

According to the parent, who wished to remain anonymous, boys were told to determine whether girls are promiscuous by the way they dress or the number of boys they date.

Of course to Conservatives such an exercise that involves children is about Liberal indoctrination because it tells them something about sexuality and empowerment that has nothing to do with keeping all things sexual a mystery until your wedding night. And of course the only people who can get married are straight people. The classes are being taught as a means to fulfill the goals of New York’s Dignity for All Students Act:

New York State’s Dignity for All Students Act (The Dignity Act) seeks to provide the State’s public elementary and secondary school students with a safe and supportive environment free from discrimination, intimidation, taunting, harassment, and bullying on school property, a school bus and/or at a school function.

This legislation amended State Education Law by creating a new Article 2 – Dignity for All Students. The Dignity Act also amended Section 801-a of New York State Education Law regarding instruction in civility, citizenship, and character education by expanding the concepts of tolerance, respect for others and dignity to include: an awareness and sensitivity in the relations of people, including but not limited to, different races, weights, national origins, ethnic groups, religions, religious practices, mental or physical abilities, sexual orientations, gender identity, and sexes. The Dignity Act further amended Section 2801 of the Education Law by requiring Boards of Education to include language addressing The Dignity Act in their codes of conduct.

In Rankin County, Mississippi that bastion of learning and enlightenment students were told there was an assembly for seniors. When the students arrived they were given a sermon by the pastor of the Pinlelake Baptist Church.:

The assembly allegedly also warned students against premarital sex, pornography, and homosexuality. As the lawsuit detailed, the program included a video of four speakers explaining how their troubled lives had been saved by Christianity:

The first speaker talked about his addiction to pornography. The second speaker talked about issues with his father. The third speaker also talked about problems with his family,as well as promiscuity and suicide. The fourth speaker said he had a great family that introduced him to the church. He said at first he did not think he could measure up to Jesus Christ so he sought hope in “other things.”
The first speaker said he used to find hope in “cars and clothes.” The second said he “used to find hope in people” and in “other guys.” He looked to these people for “brotherly love” and “fatherly love.” He said he then struggled with suicidal thoughts, and resorted to “cutting himself.” […]
About five minutes into the video, Speaker One stated: “But now I find my hope in something that’s more eternal that is not in this world.”
In turn, each of the speakers explained how turning to Jesus Christ solved their problems and recommended that other people turn to Jesus Christ as well.

Soon after, “the assembly immediately turned into a full-blown lecture on the supposed miracles, powers, and teachings of Jesus Christ and the Church Representative encouraged all students to find sanctity in him,” and no one was permitted to leave. “The School’s truancy officer, Jeff White (“Officer White”), harassed several students who attempted to leave and told them to sit back down,” read the complaint.
According to the complaint, the school repeated the same assembly for 11th graders on April 10. A few juniors had been tipped off that it would be a religious assembly and “attempted to go to the library or another classroom instead but they were prevented from doing so by Officer White.” A third mandatory assembly was held this Monday for 10th graders, the suit alleges.

The lawsuit being filed by a student with help from the American Humanist Association can be found here. I leave it to the reader to determine which is the greater harm to children.

  1. Hi Sarah;

    What a screwed up system!

Why didn’t they use an old priest trying to make out with a young boy and having the boy say “no”? After all that happens too,

I am getting a little sarcastic. Pierre Trudeau once said, what ever happens in the bedroom between consenting adults is between them and no one else. I am paraphrasing as I do not remember the actual quote. He was right.

However, when children are young, teaching them to say no is a good thing. How this is taught is another matter entirely.
