THE ASHLEY DEPEW KNOCKOUT GAME HOAX: AMERICA’S LATEST MORAL PANIC
There was quite a bit of outrage on the Right about Danya Morales, the waitress who appears to have about a homphobic slur. The full force of the Conservative blogosphere came out against Morales and for the family. To this newspaper the facts never seemed to square. Same thing for the case of Ashley DePew who said she was a victim of “The Knockout Game” in St Louis last month. Jim Hoft at Gateway Pundit led the charge with a headline of “AWFUL!” and continued to point to the incident as further proof of the violent nature of “black youths.”
Well, as it turns out Ashley DePew lied to protect her boyfriend Justin Simms who was the individual who punched DePew. Both now face charges of lying to police. So once again a black citizen was accused of a crime they didn’t commit and none of the Conservative bloggers are coming forward to denounce the moral panic because it doesn’t fit into their business plan. That’s right business plan because the Right needs moral panic to justify their retrograde ideas. Beth Storro accused a black woman of throwing acid in her face and at that time acid attacks were the fuel to light the fire under the Conservative base. Today it’s the Knockout Game which is becoming more and more clearly and urban legend.
