Citing 14 CFR 91.137, the Federal Aviation Administration has issued a Notice to Airmen [NOTAM] declaring the airspace over Ferguson, Missouri a no fly zone. The reason given is, “To provide a safe environment for law enforcement activities.” This follows the media being ordered away from Ferguson last night as tear gas was fired into the yards of people and across public roads.

I’ve seen many police states try to use tactics similar to this in the past. Egypt, Iran, East germany all places where it wasn’t safe to be a journalist. Law enforcement is granted many powers in the United States not in the name of protecting themselves from harm or even public safety but to ensure that they don’t allow anyone to see them doing anything improper. This is another of those cases. Who would fly over Ferguson? Media helicopters for sure but also possibly journalists who want to use drones with GoPro cameras to get better angles that cannot be achieved on the ground. The NOTAM remains in effect through 18 August 2014.
