FROM THE DESK OF THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF: HOW CAN “PRO-LIFE” PEOPLE FEEL MORE OUTRAGE OVER LOOTING AND VANDALISM THAN THE MURDER OF A YOUNG MAN?
This is the question that has been in my mind over the last 48 hours. This question has been in my mind because I seriously doubt if the people who I have read complaining about the burning of a convenience store after the murder of a young man by a police officer have any compassion for Human Beings. A single photo that I have seen on the Internet distills my concern for the state of America’s minority young men:
Conservatives and their pro-gun acolytes are trying desperately to make this the fault of Michael Brown Jr. To these people it must have been a case of the yet unnamed police officer defending himself. That Brown did not have a weapon and did not have access to a weapon is apparently irrelevant to those who feel that their “way of life” has been threatened from the very day President Barack Obama won the 2008 election. As dismayed as I am to say this I believe that this is the last straw for America’s cities and their long oppressed and misunderstood minority populations. Marginalized for long decades even after civil rights legislation made overt racism illegal these Human Beings are n ow in the digital age being vilified for simply existing.
Conservatives feel cornered in their suburban homes surrounded by the wealth of a middle class existence but they lack the real power that they crave. A few generations ago they answered only to their own kind; their governments reflected back to them their bigotry in the form of a corporate attired face from their tribe and any resistance by the “other” in the name of simply being treated as Human was crushed with an iron fist. Today the tactics used by those who would deprive citizens of their most basic of civil rights are no longer a fist of iron but a vest of Kevlar, a tactical uniform, an automatic weapon and armored personnel carriers in a town of less than 25,000 people.
For many conservatives in America this is a frightening time. Some do not want this to be exposed as an event of bigotry for their own political reasons while others work to make the victim in this horrible situation appear to deserve the execution he received. Both are on the wrong side of history because that long stream is flowing toward those who are different from you and away from your centuries of wasted privilege.
