THE SATURDAY BIG QUESTION: WHY ISN’T SARAH CULHANE DEAD?
That is a rhetorical question but the answer to the question in the title of this post is as complex as any issue in America today. It would be most facile of me to suggest simply that Sarah Culhane isn’t dead because she lives in Pennsylvania rather than Missouri where Michael Brown lived. Worse would be for me to d=say that her affluence, well that of her parents saved her life. Before I go too far down the rabbit hole of reasons why she isn’t dead let’s get a little background on the events of early September this year.
Culhane, according to police and media reports, was driving her BMW sedan when she struck a vehicle in Bensalem, Bucks County, PA. She fled that incident despite it being witnessed by a Bensalem Police Department officer in their patrol car. The officer gave chase but broke off the pursuit. Culhane, it is alleged, struck another vehicle in Bensalem this time injuring a woman who had to be transported to a local hospital. This collision didn’t cause Culhane to stop which led to her striking a third vehicle where she was eventually apprehended. All of this happened on a Thursday morning between 0900 and 1000.
Now I have no idea what Sarah’s mental state was at the time of these alleged events but it sure seems that she was in a poorly driven hurry. While being arrested she fought police officers and in one report she kicked one member of law enforcement in the head. She is being held in lieu of $750,000 bond.
I’m going to cut to the chase here. If the person driving that car had been anything other than a white Lawrenceville School [Tuition for boarding students is $53,300 per year.–F.S.] educated former field hockey star and child of privilege she would have been at least tasered in the struggle with police. That’s right folks Sarah Culhane is alive for the simple reason that her skin is white which means that no matter where you go the value of white life is higher to cops than the value of black, brown or yellow life. Michael Brown stole some cigars, not a death sentence. He jaywalked not a death sentence. He assaulted a cop, just as Culhane did after she caused injury to another person and severe property damage to three cars. Brown is dead; Sarah Culhane will likely finish her studies at Amherst never acknowledging the power of white privilege and the danger of affluenza.
