I’ve seen some very stupid things done in the name of religion, politics and race over the past decade but few stand out more than the the similar reactions to change in America by Conservative Christians and change in the wider world by ISIS. Yes, you can start burning me in effigy from Aleppo to Zions Crossroads for making the comparison but despite the gulf in reaction the root cause of why ISIS beheads westerners and why Conservative Christians feel persecuted in a nation where the religion is far and wide the majority are one in the same.

Simply put, fear is what motivates both sides to light the fuse that will destroy any hope for them to gain what they most desire– power and control. The limitation of violence by Conservative Christians only exists because America is a land of plenty. Put them in the same backwaters where ISIS fights, places like Assad’s Syria and the desert latrine of Yemen and the same people you see in pews would be opening fire to “take their country back!” Islam, however, like Christianity, is made up of a majority of people who want to to live their lives in Peace and a relative amount of comfort. A few radicals, Eric Rudolph and the most recent murderer of the State Police officers in Pennsylvania come to mind as the exception rather than the rule. And it is true that for every jihadi that is willing to follow a corrupted version of Islam there are ten thousand that want nothing more than what every Human being wants out of the first life; a safe place to live and work to do, a person to love and spend their life with and hope to be comforted in old age by those who have come after them.

These are basic right every Human being has and it is a corruption of order to take them away. However, for reasons unknown to my mind, both Conservative Christians and apostate Muslims believe their way is the only way and they are elect to decide what the rest of the people who inhabit their nation states should and should not do. Fundamentally, refusing to sell a gay or lesbian couple a wedding cake by someone who at best selectively lives a Christian life is just as brutal event as the beheading of an American by ISIS. To mock a transgender person is no less an act of terrorism than detonating a suicide bomb or swinging a hatchet at a police officer.

In Hindsight

When will all of us come to the realization that there is no one true way to Peace in One’s Soul? I wish I could answer that question, I really do. Because it is likely the defining question of the 21st Century.

“A varied reality is little more than a lie. It appears to be one thing but inside it’s another. The one-eyed, old man in the glades told me the whole point of the varying was for you to end up on top and in control. You got to know your audience for that to happen. You got to sniff out what they need the most, make it weakness, and turn it to your advantage. It’s an evil thing indeed when honest human need is spun into barbed trip wire but it’s what I had to do and I got the strength from my very own enemy inside the walls.

That thing chants, “Kill or be killed,” and I know now it’s not an enemy. It’s the killer inside Way of the Horns men were to find reason for.

Everybody’s got the kill or be killed in ‘em, men and women, but you don’t kill with it, you’re not even supposed to, but you are expected to use the strength of that power. That’s why you got it and if you don’t use it, well like the misery kept split from the ecstasy its vicious will have its way with you and everybody else.”
