JULIA ANN SHIELDS OF HIXSON, TENNESSEE WENT ON A SHOOTING SPREE IN SUBURB, POINTED WEAPON AT POLICE AND WAS ARRESTED AND IS IN CUSTODY. MY QUESTION IS WHY?
The year 2014 has been a crucible for how law enforcement reacts to individuals they feel are resisting arrest in the United States. This past late summer, Sarah Culhane, a young woman in Pennsylvania went on a wild joyride smashing into several cars and hitting at least one person with her vehicle before being apprehended by police. This woman, an accomplished college athlete, resisted arrest and struck at least one police officer in the head. She was taken into custody and the event has virtually disappeared from the media focus.
Conservative bloggers noted that they didn’t feel that Culhane was perceived as a threat to LEOs who responded despite her resistance. Somehow, Eric Garner, however was and it cost him his life. Now it is well noted that Culhane comes from a wealthy family and she is female and was unarmed except for feet and fists after being removed from the luxury car she was driving.
Fast forward to Boxing Day 2014 in the Chattanooga suburb of Hixson, Tennessee. A few minutes after 1530 local time, Julia A. Shields, 45, wearing body armor opened fire on two people sitting in a car at a stop sign. She continued shooting randomly in the neighborhood until she stopped at the Stuart Heights Baptist Church on Cloverdale Drive where she attempted to flee law enforcement.
It is documented that Shields pointed her weapon at police but unlike Tamir Rice in Cleveland, Ohio or Antonio Martin in Berkeley, Missouri, Shields is in custody. She faces several charges including three counts of attempted murder. But she isn’t on a morgue slab an eventuality that would have likely been used by conservatives to take the air out of the arguments that white criminals in life threatening situations are often treated differently than black criminals in similar situations.
Martin had fired no shots; he’s dead. Rice had a toy weapon; he’s dead. Garner had no weapon; he’s dead. Brown had no weapon; he’s dead. Shields fired multiple times times; she’s alive. I don’t feel gender is a matter in this case because it is clear Julia Shields was willing to discharge her weapon with no regard for public safety. She was a threat to everyone including law enforcement. Somehow the police who responded in Hixson didn’t feel she was as a great a threat as in Berkeley, or Cleveland, or Ferguson or New York City. I’d be the last person in Hell to say that the police in America don’t face tough choices on a daily basis, however, I’d be remiss if I didn’t point out that no matter how stupid, violent or irrational you are, if you are all those things and white in America, you have a much higher chance of surviving to trial than if you are all those things and black or brown.
