Social media and a few MSM outlets are abuzz this morning after Referee Ed Hochuli, who has been officiating NFL games since 1983, using the incorrect microphone referred to the replay official Tom Sifferman as “jungle boy.” Many media outlets tried to make this some sort of racial thing, but clearly under brief examination it is not. Apparently the nickname for Sifferman stems from a jungle trip in Hawaii many years ago that the current replay official took. See Mr Sifferman in his glory days below.

As a sportswriter one of the things I detest the most is that sports like politics have devolved along racial and ideological lines. If this trend continues football games between teams from regionally polarized areas might descend into the type of hooliganism that soccer saw in the 1980s in Great Britain. I mean honestly had Sifferman been black and he said “Thanks, Tom” would that too have caused an uproar? After further review the comment is not racist nor is it a scandal.
