FROM THE DESK OF THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF: WHY WE CHOSE TO POST THE LATEST CHARLIE HEBDO COVER
In journalism, there are many things to consider prior to going forward with a story. Are the sources credible, is the story something the public need to be warned about, is there a real importance to the matter personally for the reader. of course, there are many, many more but this story, the attack on Charlie Hebdo in Paris and the hostage crisis that followed struck us here in our bones.
many conservatives in America disagree with our methods, question our qualifications and even have threatened us in the past. This is a clearly Liberal, clearly satirical and clearly anti-theocratic blog. As editor-in-chief, I will listen to any opinion that differs from ours here. I have posted many responses to conservatives and have only had to ban one from commenting here. Nothing has come close to the threats that the staff of Charlie Hebdo have had to endure.
Because of this I sat down with Pain and the others in the Consiliul, and set out why I think we should post the latest Charlie Hebdo cover and asked what context in which it should be posted. Our Majordomo who was offended by some of the cartoons conveyed to all of us that the need to reform Islam far outweighs the insult felt. “The time of being backward to the point of seeing violence in a modern world as a solution to an insult of one’s religion is long past,” Pain said.
In this statement we all, Diane Valencen, Sarah Bloch, Fred Schwartz and I, all agree. You fully have the right to mock us personally. You fully have the right to be vocal in your disagreement with our politics and our posts. What no one has the right to do is silence the Press. This is what those apostate Muslims wish to do in an effort to change the world from civilized to uncivilized by virtue of their illiterate interpretation of the Qu’ran. In this jihad, both internal and external, civilization must be victorious over the darkness of theocracy in all its forms.
