This is something that began to really become a meme after the Democratic party took full control of Congress in 2008. Conservatives have been celebrating minor events like declining ratings for a TV show that they think is too liberal while at the same time declaring that same sex marriage will never get 37 state support from the people or the courts. At that time they said it was a state matter because Conservative love some States’ Rights.

After an appeal to the Federal District Court in Birmingham same sex marriage is now law in Alabama. The Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court, Roy S. Moore [you may remember him as the guy who tried to have a five thousand pound statue of the Ten Commandments plopped in the courthouse back in the early 2000s] has takn exception to this ruling. This isn’t a surprise to me because Moore was kicked of the same court over which he now presides in 2003 for, wait for it, failing to comply with rulings.

The Alabama case was appealed, by Moore to the SCOTUS who 7-2 declined to hear the appeal. States’ Rights? Thus, and rightly so, same sex marriages are being performed in the state of Alabama. This despite Moore’s order that they not be performed. Old Roy must have skipped a few civics classes way back in the day.

In Hindsight

If you are a Progressive and young in America you are about to blessed with a golden age of technology and civil liberty unprecedented in the history of your world. If you are a Conservative and old things are going to get more and more shitty as time goes from your perspective. I get it you are scared of all this change and your social set you were given as an adolescent in the 1950s or 1960s to be a good patriotic American and a good Christian didn’t cover having to deal with all these black and brown people on a level playing field and you didn’t know that gay was anything other than a slur. Trust me I was born in Brooklyn in 1948; I get it. But what I could to as a bisexual kid in 1963 was pick my battles and wait. I waited and the time has finally come that people are being judged by the content of the character not by the color of their skin, their gender identity or their sexual preference. Like my good friend Danny Alvarado used to say in the neighborhood, “Don’t worry about bullets, you hear them, it’s the fucking brick that you never see.”

I died in 1999 in Mount Sinai Hospital after a long bout with lung cancer. I smoked my whole life since age 11 so 40 years of that tells you what you get. I died a year and six months before Robin Green whom I’d known since 1981. Why was I condemned to Hell? That’s the easiest question I’ll be asked all day Bill. I came here because I, like most people couldn’t pass the standard to go to the other place. There hasn’t been a new Human go up there in over 90 years. Being gay isn’t even on the list of things that are serious punishment in the Afterlife. Atheism isn’t either. Suicide, murder, rape, theft, refusing to acknowledge your known self, bearing false witness against others those are serious crimes that get you serious time in the Field of Crosses or in the case of suicide an Eternity suffering in the Suicide Gardens. Got anymore questions about Hell? I have all the answers!
