DINESH D’SOUZA AND THE CANCER OF CONSERVATIVE BIGOTRY
Fundamentally, most conservatives in America are good people I think. What makes them good people is that they want the best for their families and friends and of course themselves. All people, likely save for the ISIS fighters and their doomed theocratic desires and the true, want a better life for the people they hold dearest. I will not try to compare the brutality of the so called Islamic State to the pettifogging men before the cameras of the modern American conservative movement; that would be a miscarriage of journalism.
What I can say is that actions like those of Dinesh D’Souza just recently on Twitter make me weary of American politics in a way I haven’t felt since the 1970s. Back then as a young man in New York City the entire town talked about one thing and one thing only, Richard Nixon. Like today, there was not a universal dislike of the American President. In fact, there were many who piled into my cab from 1973 until his resignation who felt Nixon was being bullied and blackmailed by the “liberal press” in the form of the Washington Post. Nothing angered New York Republicans in that time more than being dictated to by Washington while at the same time relishing the power of the GOP held White House.
This brings me back to D’Souza who I feel would have fit right in with that cast of characters in the Nixon Administration. Like Haldeman, D’Souza saw himself as a conservative kingmaker of the future and that future was going to be 2016. But like many within the Nixon Administration, Dinesh D’Souza’s personal desires did not match the necessary public facade of fidelity and fairness that conservatives claim as their badge of honor. Conservaties are quick to denounce quietly anyone who openly is bigoted and this is known. What is clear to me as a journalist is that this bigotry which is pervasive in conservative quarters is accepted, gleefully, by the rank and file that will fracture off and form a third party as was suggested by Mark Noonan just this week.
The bigots in the conservative movement today are no different from garden variety bigots of the Democratic Party of old. They are are white men and the white women to parade with them before the cameras in hope of getting their minutes of fame. They no longer hold the whip hand of the overseer, but they do stoke the fires of hatred on talk radio in the form of Rush Limbaugh and Laura Ingraham and on television in the form of Sean Hannity and Megyn Kelly. Those voices are loud and clear to the 40,000,000 people in America who call themselves conservatives in the United States of America. Their racial and cultural bigotry, coupled with their belief that their religion is the one true religion and their certain knowledge that they are the rightful heirs of all the good things in the wealthiest nation on Terra is what they would serve to the future generations of Americans.
Young people in the United States know better. They see the value of a global, multicultural world where people are accorded respect for their Humanity. It is a better world that we, Progressives, offer not a destruction or an annihilation of the old values. What we simply offer is the opposite of bigotry. Now change is something that tastes bitter in the mouths of conservatives who have held a golden chain around the necks of their people with fear and hatred for so many years. It’s easy to make the case that black people are simply stupid and violent if the only news you ever see supports that mantra. it’s easy to make people in rural communities that have little exposure to anything other than Fox News and Sunday sermons to believe that all gay men are pedophiles, all lesbians want to castrate men and all transgender people just want to lurk in bathrooms if this is their daily call to prayer from the radio to the television to the pulpit. My point here is that everyone Conservative, Progressive and Moderate alike need to take these last few years of the Obama Administration and come to a clear and simple realization. Obama is the President and he will be leaving office in a little less than two years. All the name calling, birther bullshit and bigotry have failed to tear this man down, shake his resolve or make America weaker. The smart kids in the room know that their is a great progressive future just over the next rise. That rise are the elections of 2016, 2018 and 2020. Standing on top of that promontory and looking out into the future I see all of the type of nonsense done by weak and corrupt men like D’Souza falling away like a fog revealing and America that can work together, prosper together and move Terra peacefully into the middle of the 21st Century.
