NATIONAL LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS MEMORIAL FUND REPORTS OFFICER HOMICIDES BY GUN DOWN FIFTY PERCENT THIS YEAR
The formal clearinghouse for law enforcement officer related deaths, The National Law Enforcement Memorial Fund reports this morning that 8 officers were killed in the period from 1 January 2014 through 15 March 2014 as compared to 4 killed in the period from 1 January 2015 through 15 March 2015. Overall, the number of officer deaths is down 8% from 24 in 2014 to 22 in 2015. The only increase in cause of officer related death are those which are listed as traffic related having risen to 11 incidents so far this year vice 9 in the same period in 2014. Not counted in these statistics are officer suicides which totaled 126 in 2013 according to the crisis hotline service Badge of Life which employs 3,200 chaplains. Officer suicides are down off their peak in the last decade of over 400 per year between 2005 and 2009. Total line of duty deaths in the United States among law enforcement officers was 112. Of those 31 were killed by gunfire.
