THE CENTER FOR MEDICAL PROGRESS VERSUS STEM EXPRESS
Conservatives, being powerless to overturn Roe v Wade have turned to a 20th Century gotcha tactic straight out of the playbook of 60 Minutes. The Center for Medical Progress, an ideological organization dedicated to the destruction of Planned Parenthood and an end to a woman’s right to have an abortion in the United States, has produced a series of hidden camera videos which give the impression that Planned Parenthood and a bioresearch company, Stem Express have conspired to gain fetal organs and tissue without the consent of the woman who had an abortion. While there is no definitive proof that either of these organizations have done anything criminal, the court of political opinion on the Right has already made up its mind.
Several calls have been made to defund Planned Parenthood, which receives as much as a half billion federal dollars a year, by a wide spectrum of conservative elected officials. This is a backdoor effort to continue the largest battle of the Culture Wars–one that most Progressives thought was won decades ago. But over the last ten years, the Right has redoubled its efforts to limit the access that American women have to abortions and if necessary to women’s services.
The truly horrible part of this story is that the blood and tissue and organs harvested for medical research would lead to cures to some of the most deadly diseases affecting hundreds of millions of Human Beings. Those cures, like the health and well being of American women mean nothing to the conservatives. Those on the Right, who feel their religious beliefs must apply to all Americans because their interpretation of their religion trumps any codified secular law, have done violence against those who provide abortion services and will continue, as ISIS does to use corrupt ideas, lies and any other tool they have at their disposal to have a brief moment of bliss at bringing down yet another “progressive” institution. It is a sad commentary on the current state of American society that those trying to do what Human Beings should; extend health and well being to the masses are being made the evil enemy when the real evil enemy are those who think their ideology and religion is more important than the civil rights of nearly 170 million women.
