AN AMERICAN NIGHTMARE: HOW THE GOP COULD WIN THE 2016 ELECTION WITHOUT 270 ELECTORAL VOTES
Sit back relax and enjoy some political inside baseball. Right now all the smart kids here in Hell feel there will be some backroom magic done at the GOP Convention that shoves an angry Donald Trump aside in favor of virtually anyone else. For the purposes of this exercise that choice will be Senator Marco Rubio of Florida. Trump storms away and decides to run as the Make America Great Again Party nominee. He makes it on the ballot in only 40 states but what’s important is that after 1 October 2016 Trump is leading in five states Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia and South Carolina. Hillary Clinton in public laughs this off as Halloween comes and goes. Secretly her advisors are worried because she is trailing in Florida and the poll in Ohio is too close to call.
Election night comes and polls begin to close across America. Trump wins those five states. Rubio wins in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Florida, Texas all of the northern tier of the Rockies, Utah, Texas, Alaska and Arizona. Clinton wins California, the Pacific Northwest Hawaii the entire rest of the Northeast, Virginia and Ohio [barely]. Clinton ends the night with 269 electoral votes, Rubio with 221 and Trump with 35.
The 24 hour news cycle erupts in a rictus of political orgasms that threatens to break the Internet in ways Kim Kardashian can only dream of. Both major parties lawyer up. The 13 November 2016 Sunday political shows have ratings that are off the charts. Around water coolers the election is the only topic being discussed.
The establishment GOP with a newly elected House with 245 GOP members a vote would be taken to elect a President as their first order of business. Marco Rubio would be the choice on the first ballot and would be sworn in less than three weeks later. So this is my point. Trump as the GOP nominee cannot win but Trump needs only to do well and win in five states with 48 electors in the South where his message of bigotry resonates to tip the balance to the GOP based on the rules for choosing a President if no one gets to 270. Rubio, or any other brokered convention choice for the GOP has to win Florida and Pennsylvania and North Carolina or Clinton is guaranteed to win. But the key for the GOP is to field a candidate that has an appeal in Florida as a start and that can make inroads from Wilkes-Barre to Erie. After that all they need is for Trump to be Trump and nativist Southern whites to vote their vitriol.
