JOURNALISM 101: CHECKING THE FACTS AND HOW THE RIGHT WING PREFERS TO COVER A STORY
Journalism is a curious business. Getting the story out first on rare occasions is more important, to some than getting the facts straight. I would be remiss to say that I hadn’t blown stories in the past seeking to fill in the blanks with my own opinion of what I think happened rather than having three credible sources. Mercifully, my editor at the time was smarter than I.
In America in the modern era, and by that I mean in the era of the Barack Obama presidency, the savvy editor on the right wing side of journalism seems to be asleep at the switch. A story broke recently about a sexual assault in Twin Falls, Idaho involving a 5 year old girl and three boys aged 7, 10 and 14. Picking up on the story with little information the right wing blogosphere ran with what would be most damaging to the resettlement of Syrian refugees. They blazed headline on their sites that read, “Syrian Refugees Rape Little Girl at Knifepoint in Idaho.” That one in particular was run at the Drudge report and has since been removed.
They also ran detailed accounts of what happened. Resettled Syrian refugees had perpetrated this crime. There was a gang rape at knife point. The boys took turns and were instructed in what to do to the child. They urinated on her after the rape. The assailant’s families celebrated after being told what took place.
None of this was true. There was no gang rape. There was no knife. There was no humiliation by urinating on the child. The boys were not from Syria. There was no familial celebration of a rape. All of this was the fabrication of the right wing blogosphere doing the bidding of the bigots who need to feel special in a time of swift diversification in the demographics of the American population. This tectonic shift in what America looks like is scaring the well for lack of a better word– hell, out of white right wing Americans.
It appears that this falsehood began with a blog called Behind My Back and InfoWars, Drudge and then others picked it up without question. This is the essence of bad journalism but the right could care less about that until one of theirs is accused of something heinous.
