CAN TRUMP REALLY DESTROY AMERICA?
Before I dive into this meaty subject on such a fine Saturday morning here in Hell, I have to spend a little time defining what “destroy” means. First of all I don’t mean everybody dead and everything burnt to the ground. That would be silly and is a worse case scenario that, if by some weird quirk of The Fates takes place, I will address as it happens.
With that little caveat in place there are many interpretations of destroy out there. To Progressives like me living on Terra within the borders of the United States, we are concerned with civil rights both of those with citizenship and those without. While Donald Trump has said many times that he will be the LGBTQ friendly president, there is, and will remain constant pressure from the alt-right to turn back the clock on those rights and rights for other ethnic and religious minorities in the United States.
For those in the international law and public policy arena the term destroy would mean actions taken by this administration that would lead to active military conflicts across the globe and a decrease in respect even America’s allies have for the U.S. Curiously, moderates and GOP establishment types have something in common on the third interpretation of destroy and that is a weakening of the Oval Office by means of executive abuses of power or violations of the Constitution. This is the issue that keeps Republicans in Washington awake at night.
So to answer the question in full, depending on how you define destroy, yes this administration can make life a living hell for you. As a Progressive I was concerned in the first few weeks of the Obama administration that it could turn into amateur hour in a time of crisis, but quickly the President and his team showed they had the bull by the horns and were working on some serious solutions to grave problems on numerous fronts. Trump’s first week began with nasty tweets and “alternative facts” that don’t give this journalist any indication that Trump as a president will create anything other than a disaster.
