In a not too shocking move the Henagar Drive-In located in a northeast Alabama town comprised of over 2,000 mostly white Souls has cited “Christian” values in deciding not to show the Disney movie Beauty and The Beast. This decision stems from the potential that the live action musical may contain a gay character. On Facebook the theater stated, “If we can not take our 11-year-old granddaughter and 8-year-old grandson to see a movie we have no business watching it. If I can’t sit through a movie with God or Jesus sitting by me then we have no business showing it. We are first and foremost Christians. We will not compromise on what the Bible teaches. We will continue to show family-oriented films so you can feel free to come watch wholesome movies without worrying about sex, nudity, homosexuality and foul language.”
Expect to see more emboldened “Christians” seeking to tell others what they can and cannot watch in the coming months. One commenter Ann Siebert Tiece commented on the Facebook post, “Ty ty ty for your convictions. We MUST stand against evil if we are followers of Jesus Christ.” This woman is yet another in a long line of delusional conservative who feel the only way to live is the way they have chosen. I feel sorry for her and for the people who will miss this movie because of bigotry.
