As I sit here in my home relaxing after a very nice brunch with Veronica, I can’t help but think about history. Not just any history but the history of my former nation the United States of America and how it has been intertwined with the history of this newspaper. In just sixty-one days The Dis Brimstone-Daily Pitchfork will celebrate its tenth anniversary as a progressive and hard hitting news blog. Our very first story in late August 2005 was about the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana and Cavalor Epthith [q c p n!] made it clear after the first week that this blog was a work in progress and that our mission was not to change the minds of people but to “simply make them think.”

Well, people are thinking, some of them hopefully many of the more than a million that have read these pages, are. Cavalor after the first year said he was willing to keep the digital version of the paper alive for five Terran years and in that last few months before the fifth anniversary he would review our efforts and decide if it should continue for another five years. After the election of President Barack Obama and all the reporting the staff had done on the failure of the Iraq War there was a feeling of certainty that the plug would not be pulled.

On 29 August 2010 Cavalor said, “We simply cannot stop now just when things are getting interesting.” Oh, how much more interesting things have gotten since that day. This month has seen tragedy in Charleston, South Carolina as nine black Christians were murdered by a white supremacist terrorist and triumph as the United States’ Supreme Court upheld Obamacare and decided that same sex couples have marriage rights in all fifty states of the Union. Despite conservative warnings that the nation would tear itself apart if either of these decisions came to pass it is business as usual from Washington to Los Angeles on this fine morning.

So as is in my nature I’ve taken my victory lap over these two decisions, said a quiet prayer to the Fates on behalf of the grieving families of the victims in Charleston and gone back to the work that I am tasked to do here– looking for threads in the reports of news from all over Terra. There is still much work to do and Cavalor knows this best of all. Just yesterday he brought the staff in for a meeting about what we will be doing here digitally for the 2016 election. “So we’re not shutting up shop in late August?” I asked smiling. “Not a chance,” he said, “things are just getting interesting.”

More impressions from the staff on five more years of The Dis Brimstone-Daily Pitchfork follow over the rest of your week end.

HOW DO YOU CHANGE THE SOULS OF PEOPLE?

Posted in CHARLESTON SHOOTING, DIANE VALENCEN OPINIONS, HOW HELL WORKS on 21/06/2015 by Diane Valencen, D.S.V.J., O.Q.H [Journ.], ArF J., M.F.

That seems like a simple question; yet it has a very complicated answer. The Truth is that to change most people feel like they are losing something rather than gaining and thereby they are resistant to change. In reality, change is one of the very few constants in the First Life.

Most people change quite a bit from the time they are born until they land their first job. Then comes the second job. Then comes that special person into your life and thus, more change. Kids? A home? A major move from a place you have lived all your life to this point? All change.

But when fundamentals have to change it can become very scary. This isn’t some political hit piece. This is an article where I am up late at night trying to wrap my head around events like Newtown, Trayvon’s murder, Michael Brown’s murder Eric Garner’s murder and the massacre of nine innocent people in Charleston, South Carolina. I am failing miserably at this task.

Jon Stewart’s comments made it worse because well he’s right. Had Dylann Storm Roof been Malik Abdul Salaam al Tikriti and he went into a white Methodist church there wouldn’t be any conversations about insanity pleas. Al Tikriti would have likely been shot dead on the streets of Shelby, NC– and rightly so. But Roof is alive and in jail awaiting a trial and while at another time I might have written that this would be his last taste of white privilege for the rest of his natural life those words ring hollow in my ears even as I read them on this screen.

I mentioned the fundamentals earlier and by that I meant the basic core values that all people have when they interact in a society governed by laws. In current times those values seem to have changed with society. Things that were not allowed are now being allowed and even codified into new laws. This disturbs a segment of American society to the point that they feel their country is being taken away from them. To those people I would say that it never was your country in the first place. That statement is what it means to be free and blaze a trail for yourself and those you love in America. This should never have been a game set up with rigged rules where a gender, or a race or a religion or a political way of thinking or even an economic system would hold universal sway over those that did not conform.

And in the end that is what you are up against in a nation swimming in guns and ammunition, with bountiful food and water, 24 hour electricity providing power to high tech devices that connect you to the world and and endless miles of paved roads to travel. All of those things are mixed together and heated into a roux that is slathered over that racial wound that Jon Stewart talked about. How do you change the Souls of people.

One act of kindness at a time.

One act of respect at a time.

One act of compromise at a time.

One act of love at a time.

One act of empathy at a time.

One act of inclusion at a time.

One act of generosity at a time.

One act of altruism at a time.

One act of forgiveness at a time.

TO PERSECUTE AND SLAUGHTER: THE MURDER OF WALTER SCOTT BY PATROLMAN 1ST CLASS MICHAEL THOMAS SLAGER

Posted in DIANE VALENCEN OPINIONS, RACE AND POLITICS IN AMERICA on 07/04/2015 by Diane Valencen, D.S.V.J., O.Q.H [Journ.], ArF J., M.F.

This case, in North Charleston, South Carolina is not the Trayvon Martin case. It is not the Eric Garner case. Nor is it the Michael Brown case. This is plain and simple a case of a law enforcement officer who is the beneficiary of the need for a certain segment of white America to elevate people with government jobs to the status of deities. White conservatives do the same thing with the military which is comprised of citizens nothing more nothing less. To take the job of a police officer is an honorable profession, but all too often police officers act in dishonorable ways. This is the case when Patrolman 1st Class Michael Thomas Slager fired 8 rounds from his pistol at the back of a fleeing Walter Scott.

michael-slager

Conservative bloggers who have nostalgic wishes of an America where such crimes would have been celebrated in the press have been relatively silent about this murder. There is no smoking gun here; Scott was not a felon, he didn’t try to get the gun from the officer. The stolen taser story related in the police report is made a lie by the video.

I wonder as Robin Naismith Green did about the white woman who fired randomly at vehicles in Chattanooga and was cornered by the police or the affluent young white woman who injured people with her car and damaged other cars and then violently resisted arrest. Why aren’t these people dead if the universal standard of being violent in public is to be killed by law enforcement? The answer in both of those cases are they were white and Garner, Martin, Rice, Brown and Scott were all black.

Maybe police departments should screen their candidate pool for people who do not easily become fearful. Or better, maybe they should screen them for people who feel white lives matter and the lives of people of color do not. The FBI and the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice are investigating the case in North Charleston. I do not know if Slager is a bigot or a racist but I do know he has a disregard for adult Human Life and because of that he should be tried for and found guilty of murder.

I am certain that conservatives and those who believe, actually believe that Sarah Palin would be an excellent President of the United States will swear that this image is photoshopped.

RUSH LIMBAUGH THE TOTAL FUCKING IDIOT KING OF WHITE CONSERVATIVES

Posted in CONSERVATIVE BIGOTRY, DIANE VALENCEN OPINIONS, RUSH LIMBAUGH on 24/12/2014 by Diane Valencen, D.S.V.J., O.Q.H [Journ.], ArF J., M.F.

DIANE_TOMLINSON_6

This has everything. The Sony hack, wingnuttery and bigotry all rolled up in a fat, greasy cigar smoking gross ball. Yes, Rush Limbaugh has discovered that Sony Pictures was considering casting Idris Elba as the iconic superspy James Bond after Daniel Craig’s three film run ends in 2018. El Rushbo is furious that a fictional character could be portrayed by a black actor when everyone knows that James Bond is Scottish. Well that’s a stupid thing to say for a variety of reasons Rush; not the least of which that Bond is a fictional character for one. For two there are black Scottish people as hard as that might be for a conservative American to believe.

I would imagine it would really frost Limbaugh to know that real life Scottish football legend Andrew Watson was a black man as is current Sunderland and Scotalnd international Liam Bridcutt. This sort of outrage about something so trivial is typical of an ideology that has Rush Limbaugh as its king and Sarah Palin as its queen. The conservative crazy train just keeps on rambling toward that cliff with no regard for its passengers.
