A daring post from a Liberal commenter both here and at Blogs4Victory. This should be any Progressive’s first read this morning:

Thanks for mentioning our conversations Cluster. I appreciate it. I think that Amazona is correct in saying that social issues should not be the focus of any government, let alone one based upon conservative precepts. To take that statement to its logical conclusion, we all should be libertarian, as long as we do not devolve into anarchy. Unfortunately this is not the case. There are many, to many IMO, that are obsessed with social issues and use the government and it’s law making and law enforcing power to enact both restrictions and allowances. I am not a constitutional expert. I have a DAR manual that I look at from time to time but mostly for a point of clarification. I agree that it is a brilliantly written document and that the authors had enough forethought and enlightenment to be cognizant of the future. But it is also a product of it’s time, written by human beings who were every bit as complicated and flawed and brilliant and tragic as anyone living today. The essence of all words, as a conveyance of thinking, is metaphorical. (A word itself.) And as such, the words are subject to interpretation. An argument can be made that the “intent” that Amazona mentioned, is nothing more than learned guessing. (Emphasis on ned in learned.) One of the functions of the Supreme Court, is to interpret the meaning of the language that comprises the Constitution, by way of a shared consensus of opinion between a quorum of justices.
But in a representative government, if a social issue is a concern, then it does become subject to legislation. This has been a fact throughout human history. We do not live in a vacuum (no pun intended towards those who doubt my aviator skills) and in 2013 there are over 300 million people who live in the US. In 1776 there were ~ 2.5 and were primarily agrarian.
I think that conservative principals are the best choice where the issue(s) are economic in nature. But I do not disparage a degreed economist who happens to have a more fundamental understanding of the dynamics of a multi-trillion economy and how it interacts not only with those that have a dollar in their pocket, but now amongst the entire planet as well.
As I see it, it is not the educational system that is to blame, or the inherent bias that all people and businesses possess that is the root of the problems conservatism is experiencing, it is the behavior, the claims and the reporting of it. A few examples exist on this blog alone. Retired Spook going on about transformation. Society, culture and politics are fluid, not static. Please provide some specific examples Retired Spook, of how our country is suffering from the progressive nature of time and the changing attitudes of the population. There are very few examples that my feeble brain can come up with that verify your conviction that an uber left even exists, let alone paint with such broad strokes this “intense dislike of how America was founded.” Just how was it founded? Not why, but how. And why do you stereotype? Not all “liberals” are America hating. In fact, most people desire a better America, not a worse one.
Amazona’s use of inflammatory adjectives as a method of demeaning and undermining alternative points of view. And her obsession with spelling, grammar and punctuation. (I write the way I speak, commas substituting for pauses.)
I won’t even address Neo. There isn’t a better representative for the fanatical, fringe extreme that gives conservatives a bad reputation than he. Conservatism isn’t the problem. It’s conservatives.
I am a supporter of smaller government. I do not think excessive regulation(s) are a good thing. I think local control is superior to national but I also recognize the duplicity that currently exists on the right, how traditional conservatism has been eviscerated by a pandering to a certain type of uninformed and fearful individual and how tribalism has been exploited to further the monetary goals of others. This is the human condition. This is what Machiavelli often referred to and encouraged. I think that for conservatism to make a resurgence, it has to go through a metamorphosis. Unfortunately for those currently experiencing this change, it is a difficult process and it is perfectly understandable to want to blame those that don’t subscribe to the ideology, whom are not fixated with blaming the “media” or contemporary popular culture for their poor and declining image. There is a difference between cooperation and capitulation. This demarcation applies to all sides of the political grid. Self examination is a positive. A refusal to accept the need to change is not. And this applies to everyone on both a personal level and as a member of a group.
OK. I think I will slither back into my hole now.

“Penn State shouldn’t have been given athletic sanctions by the NCAA for looking the other way during Jerry Sandusky’s repeated rape and abuse of young boys. If America were truly exceptional, the military should have been brought in and the entire county which worshipped at the altar of Joe Paterno would have been razed to the ground by all those leftover bunker busting bombs Bush bought for the Iraq war.”– Governor General Srindra Singh or Gilbesht in a debate about American exceptionalism with Sheol conservative MP Yancey Harrell on “Overdark” with Maarit Outi Pekkonen last night.

17684_10151302678801275_1550939780_n

The idea of American exceptionalism is not a new meme. The thought that the people who now live on this land, once occupied by the Human Beings; taken by violence in the name of profit, are more prosperous, more intelligent, cut from a more moral cloth and closer to the favor of their chosen Creator than any other has been clearly a concept of Faith for those who now call themselves “Conservatives” for the better part of the last one hundred twenty five Terran standard years. We, Ourselves, of the Collective and The Meditators have a problem with any such notion based simply on the statement expressed in the stripes of the flag above. One must begin to ask the questions of common men, the hoi polloi, and the oligarchs who now own your government and rule your media, “Who profits from this disaster?” and “What will be the spark that causes someone to give up their comfort in a revolution from which they may not reap a similar status to those they are fighting against?”

These are serious matters, not to be taken lightly as they were at Blogs4Victory just this past week. The conservatives there simply wanted to throw red meat at downtrodden aging white men who see their fathers have lost their birthright of unchecked bigotry in the last few decades and left them nothing more than the onanism of “being white is better than being black or brown” along with their Bibles to cling to in these desperate times. And, yes, We, Ourselves admit these are desperate times– for Conservatives. Not only is their ideology, their worldview dying, they are dying. For the moment there are a few million ardent young whites out there who shout just as loudly as the over 50 crowd about the “many ills of President Obama” but let Us be honest with Ourselves, these young men and women in their twenties aren’t in this politics game to bring back the Reagan years, roll back women’s reproductive rights or to solve America’s debt issues. They are seeking a pool of like minded people who given enough familiarity will allow them to get laid; something they wouldn’t do in a similar setting surrounded by more attractive more intelligent Progressives.

the good old days

So who does profit from all of America’s ills? There are many who do profit some of these groups will shock you others are well known. All must give up something or the Union will be lost to time and to history.

The-Rich-Get-Richer-Income-Inequality

Income inequality is clearly profited from by those who really run the country the oligarchs. Not just corporate CEOs but hedge fund managers, the boards of large law firms who write the laws and then pimp them to Congress and of course the religious oligarchs who are desperately trying to remain relevant in an age where technology is nearing its ability to make deities out of Men. And in the end this is nothing more than a clearly visceral reaction to the short duration of the human lifespan manifest in the form of greed for all things material.

Poverty-In-America-704926

Poverty has been used as a tool to keep the masses at bay since Time Immemorial. Poverty is profited from by the Church, the oligarchs and their corporate media. Poverty as an extension of bigotry feeds the furnace that drives the powerful to remain powerful. They do not care that a child is one day celebrating the reelection of America’s first Man of Color to the highest elected office and the next day a victim of gun violence. They do not care that children go hungry in the wealthiest nation on Terra as long as they are safe behind their gates and in their dens of luxury. Poverty is a prison sentence handed down by generations of greed and fear in the name of tribal purity.

An examination of these two ills shows how all the others are interconnected. It is time to drain their trough or America will be the soil where the seeds of failure of an entire species will be sown.

I’ve seen some really dumb things in my job here at The Dis Brimstone Daily Pitchfork in the past 15 years doing research and for a brief time serving as interim Editorial Page Editor. Nothing, and I do mean nothing compares to this:

Okay, put into its simplest terms anyone that would drive this thing around has some issues. There’s a lack of love in his or her life that can only be filled by fanatical religious belief. Lucky for this person they live in America where people just shake their heads or laugh rather than pulling the owner out and setting trailer on fire. That said I want to show you what love looks like as a counter point.

So conservative reader, how is your marriage suffering because these two people are in love and have committed to each other? It’s love despite what Mitt Romney says and it should be respected in marriage if they choose to commit to marriage. Ownership of the word marriage is the bunker where conservative bigotry is making its last stand against Freedom in America. Love is so clearly fundamental to everyone it seems other than fundamentalists and a few black preachers who are still scared of the gay.

In Hindsight

The Culture Wars, as I have said many times really ended in 1920 when women got the right to vote. Now no matter how many qurans Terry Jones burns, or how many rallies for the TEA Party the Koch Brothers have or how many stern letters Catholic Bishops send to the White House they have all been exposed as frauds and the people have decided that America isn’t a faux Christian nation but a secular Liberal/Progressive nation that assures even the most vile and odious right wing religous nuts have the right to freedom of speech.

RICK SANTORUM EXPLAINS IT ALL: “WE WILL NEVER HAVE THE MEDIA ON OUR SIDE, EVER, IN THIS COUNTRY. WE WILL NEVER HAVE THE ELITE SMART PEOPLE ON OUR SIDE, BECAUSE THEY BELIEVE THEY HAVE THEY SHOULD HAVE THE POWER TO TELL YOU WHAT TO DO.”

Rick Santorum speaking yesterday at the Values Voter Summit in Washington, D.C., gave a curious insight into just who the powerbrokers on the Religious Right want their base to be. If taken directly in context, which is something the Right rarely does in regard to the sitting President of the United States, Mr. Santorum speaking to a largely white and boisterous crowd at the Omni Shoreham Hotel said this:

I don’t even know what kind of revolution we’re in right now. We seem to be creating dynamism in the marketplace like it’s never been seen. Why? Freedom. Freedom, not government dictates, not planners who are going to invest in solar energy companies and tell us what our future is going to be by some bureaucrat making those decisions. No. No, we’re going to trust you.

That’s why the media doesn’t go along with us. You have to understand that. They don’t like conservatism. They like the other side, not necessarily, I would argue, because they necessarily agree with them. It’s because they can influence the country more. You see, if just a few people make decisions about what this world looks like and what this country looks like, well, then you can have people sitting in offices in the major media outlets and in Hollywood who can – they can deal with a small group of people and influencing them, getting them to jump through the hoops they want to. It’s much harder if all of you collectively build America. It’s much harder to influence you.

We will never have the media on our side, ever, in this country. We will never have the elite smart people on our side, because they believe they should have the power to tell you what to do. So our colleges and universities, they’re not going to be on our side. The conservative movement will always be – and that’s why we founded Patriot Voices – the basic premise of America and American values will always be sustained through two institutions, the church and the family. (Applause.)

And so economic conservatism – libertarian types can say, oh, well, we don’t want to talk about the social issues. Without the church and the family, there is no conservative movement. There is no basic values in America in force, and there is no future for our country. (Applause.)

So it is our job in this election, it is our job, to go out and make a difference. It is our job to go out and talk to fellow believers. And I don’t mean Christians. I mean fellow believers in the American creed, fellow believers in those basic principles that built our country.

Go out and preach to them the American ethic. Preach to them what made us great. And remind them that that greatness does not lie in Washington, D.C. or in the hands of a president. It lies in each and every one of us and in our families.

I’m excited, because I think we have a nominee who understands that. I read – I didn’t see it, but I read the transcript of what Governor Romney said here. I could have given that speech. I feel good. I feel good. (Laughter, applause.) We have to do our part.

So I encourage each and every one of you to leave here energized. It is our watch. At the end of the Declaration of Independence, we all know those words. We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are – excuse me. We know these words, that we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortune and our sacred honor.”

What we have here from Mr. Santorum is telling on many levels. Clearly, there is an us against them sort of dynamic going on but these sorts of rifts are created by the Left as well just not to so much of an extreme. Marshall McLuhan famously said in 1946 that “the medium is the message” and that is as true today in American politics as it ever was. Santorum makes the point, however, that anti-intellectualism and satisfaction with being economically middling should be coupled with a drone-like adherence to religious and social beliefs. That makes no sense when you cosider that Mitt Romney is an Ivy League educated man worth more than $250 million whose family will have inherited wealth for many more generations into the future. So here the dynamic is clear as well. Santorum uses his Theocratic beliefs which are similarly held by middle class conservative white voters throughout the rural North, the South and the Midwest, to build a bridge in the air between the class animux that should exist between an elite intellectual businessman who has desires to be the highest elected official in America and the hoi polloi of the Right.

The only problem is that the Religious Right have seen this movie before. They saw this with the election of George W Bush in 2000. In that election the race became a watershed both for businesses and for individuals that was about what the future direction of America would be; a path toward neconservatism, a curious amalgamation of social values and military might a global cop, or neoprogressivism where the environment and social safety net issues would finally get the treatment in the public sphere they deserve by way of making hard choices now to assure a better future for for the generations of Americans to come.

America did not, I feel, fail itself by electing George W Bush. That lesson needed to be learned by Conservatives and Liberals alike. That path took America to trillions of dollars wasted in Iraq for a victory that was not won because of a lies told to heat the blood of the same Americans that Santorum spoke to at the Values Voter Summit. In this race Mitt Romney, a man who inspires no one is not seeking to inspire anyone. He, like George W Bush, is willing to offer lip service to the far Right and the Religious Right to get their votes on 6 November 2012. Romney is not a “true believer” like Catholic Rick Santorum is. Romney needs “true believer” surrogates like Santorum to get out there and energize the base.

The Conservatives now are being told, by one of their pious masters, that they are mediocre and stupid to paraphrase Mr. Santorum. I will admit here that the GOP is depending on those with negative attitudes toward President Barack Obama to constitute the majority of their voter base. The average TEA Party voter in 2012 can quote chapter and verse the lies about welfare to work requirements, their theories about corruption of the Supreme Court in the Affordable Care Act decision and most recently their refusal to believe that Muslim take their religion so seriously that a film trailer could inspire violence on a regional scale and thereby conflating the tragedy of four dead diplomtic service workers including Ambassador J Christopher Stevens into the failure of the Carter administration in 1979.

To the delusional voters on the Right this morning the sitting president is the “other.” This belief changing before 6 November 2012 is as unlikely as MSNBC becoming a digital parrot of the Koch Brothers’ goals for America. Yet Barack Obama is the sitting President of the United States. Getting there was the easy part; keeping Obama in office is what will be difficult. I, personally, still believe that the President will be re-elected. The violence in the Middle East will be a campaign footnote before the first debate is held on 3 October 2012 in Denver, Colorado; the teacher’s strike in Chicago will likely end next week.

By this time next week, the American electorate will be talking about the striking differences between the Right and the Left. Their choices are defined clearly by what has been said about women’s health on both sides. Their choices have defined by the Right wishing to exert controls on a society that no longer looks as it did in the post World War 2 era. Santorum and the “true believers” want to go back to those days when women could not choose to have or not to have a child, to have birth control options. The Religious Right want to go back to a time when the electorate was dominated by middle class white men who feared religion and who had wives who voted as they were told by their husbands and fathers. Conservatives who are being duped yet again by Mitt Romney want the gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender people of America to go back in the closet at best or be rounded up by the Sheriff Joe Arpaio types doing the same work of Bull Conner in the 1960s. This election is about being a Human Being who has a choice in charting one’s own path in freedom, vice being a cog in a religion actuated corporate profit driven machine where your only choice is to pray to someone else’s deity that the law will not find fault in your personal decision and come for you.

I read a Blogs 4 Victory post entitled, “The False Narrative” last night and went to bed with the words of a commenter turned poster Cluster ringing in my ears. That ringing turned to laughter as I thought of how I would reply to his positions on abortion, racism and the War on Women. Here’s the gist of his argument:

Abortion –The party with the extreme position on abortion is the democrats. They currently support federal funding, partial birth, and live birth abortion, and essentially the right to kill the unborn without question at anytime. This position is far out of the mainstream, and voters need to know this. Conservatives support life with the rape/incest exception, which is optional, and that position is actually the real pro choice position.

– Racism – Honestly the political party that harbors racists, are the democrats. Most of them simply believe that people of a darker skin color are victims of this society solely because of their pigmentation, and that without government help, they are incapable of living a productive life. This mindset is deplorable and offensive. They also believe apparently that they need to be the protectors of our first black President, because obviously he is unable to withstand criticism of most any kind, due once again to the color of his skin.

– War on Women – Once again, the political party that is waging war against women is the democrats. How offensive is it for most women to know that Obama and Sandra Fluke believe that women are incapable of providing for their own contraception needs? How hypocritical is it for liberal feminists to say “keep your hands off my body” but then expect us to pay for their abortion and healthcare needs? How denigrating is it to believe that a pregnancy is an obstacle in a woman’s life? The fact is, women are incredibly strong and more than capable of determining, and paying for, their way through life without anyones help.

Here is my response:

Abortion—The facts on this are simple. The Democratic Party supports a woman’s right to choose when she has a child. Thereby, a woman to the Left has a right to choose to have an abortion that takes place within the time allotted by federal law. I repeat federal law dictates the time span of fetal development where an abortion is legal. In some cases, where the life of the mother is in jeopardy, an abortion is medically necessary beyond this federal limit. I woman cannot, in any jurisdiction in the United States of America have an abortion procedure beyond 21 weeks simply by saying she wants and abortion. I do not know anyone who supports partial birth abortion on demand. I also understand the law that says any viable fetus born alive even in an abortion clinic must be kept alive or the physician and anyone attending can be charged with murder. What you have written is hyperbole for the conservative base and nothing more.

Racism—It is easy to throw this term around but I find this very dangerous. I think America has progressed concerning race more in the period from 1950 to 2000 than it has at any other time in its history. Since 2000 however, there has been a turn from the institutionalized racism of the last century to a reactionary bigotry over the last 12 years. One has to understand the difference between bigotry and racism to even engage in this conversation. Racism needs power to fuel it. The power comes from politics. If those in charge all come from the same racial demographic then it is far more easy to keep another racial demographic at bay with laws that segregate them. The post Civil War Democratic Party in the South, made up of the most ardent conservatives of the time, saw the opportunities they had once the Reconstruction ended to initiate laws that would secure them power for what they thought would be forever. Those conservative Democrats could not have seen the Federal Government ever exercising its power below the Mason-Dixon line again and for over one hundred years they were right. So instead of having the vision for the future that Grant held blacks were put into a lower caste by the ruling white elite in the South and life for them remained that way until 1946 when the first stirrings for a second emancipation began. By the time the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed and signed by President Lyndon Johnson the white powerbrokers in the South realized they needed a new strategy, one less embarrassing than the overt bigotry supported by racist thinking that has been broadcast to the world by CBS News night after night. It took four years for a savior to come to the conservatives in the South who while Democrats were more than willing to shed that label to keep the suffering status quo in regard to the Negro. President Nixon utilized the animus between working class white and working class blacks in the South to march to victory in 1968. Reagan in his very first campaign speech did the same in Neshoba County, Mississippi and reinforced the new ethic of conservative views on race with his alliance with the Moral Majority in 1980. Race was cast aside in the late 1980s by President George H. W. Bush in the name of continuing economic prosperity. Demographers, however, knew that in a generation a great decline was going to take place among the white electorate. Younger white voters were becoming more and more liberal. Black voters had allied squarely with the new Liberal post-Kennedy Democratic Party led by Northern Liberals and Midwestern moderates. The GOP once a party of Ed Burke of Massachusetts and Barry Goldwater was now the party of Strom Thurmond and David Duke. The overt race baiting politics of the 1930s and 1940s no longer had a place among the Conservatives as it was no longer socially acceptable. The bigotry had to come from a dedicated and older bloc of conservative voters who see blacks and Latinos as a drain on their wealth [keep our taxes low], see minorities as a violent threat to their personal security [flash mobs] and demand that any leader of the country be able to prove he is American even if it is clear he was born in the US [birtherism]. Conservatives don’t need Racism because as their demographics shrink over the next 20 years, with the dying off of the Baby Boomers having begun in earnest, the power base that would have driven it too will have died off. Young Conservatives will take a new more inclusive tack. They will put the moralizing and religious traditionalism behind them and work to make their party a more populist and albeit nationalist simulacrum of the moderate wing of the Democratic Party. The next fifty years will be very interesting politically for America. On December 31, 2064 the last Baby Boomer will be 100 years old. The country that you know now will be long gone. I imagine it will still be prosperous but that prosperity will be dominated by Liberal married couples made up of majority that is composed of those that conservatives most fear the most. Educated white women will marry outside their race more as more and more blacks and Latinos earn higher education degrees in a truly level playing field. Gay and Lesbian couples will become full citizens as their marriages will be recognized as marriage in every state in the Union. Abortion will become rarer as government provided contraception is made cheap and widely available as Obamacare proves to be as effective for the young worker as Social Security is for the elderly. Churches will once again be filled with people of Faith rather than peasants of Fear. I feel that America in 2064 might be in the shining diamond midst of a new global golden age and she cannot be that with retrograde racial thinking but only by the continuing efforts of Progressives to keep up the pressure on the wobbling old man of Conservatism.

The War on Women—Post Clinton America finds itself in that phase the demographers of the 1980s warned conservatives about. Not to beat the issue to death but the pro-life position on abortion, as a political issue, while cloaked in the sweet intentions of preserving life is really nothing more than the most desperate reaction to a societal failure by white conservatives. The birth rates of Latinas and black women outpace that of white women nearly 8 to 1. Double that number for college educated white women over the age of 30 while the same demographic of black and Latinas is still a 4 to 1 advantage. It is politically perfectly understandable why a group of people who wants to stay in power, to have the America that they want would turn to issues of abortion and contraception when they are being beaten in the breeding race by such a wide margin. Also, marrying race with gender, this gives the Right another canard they can use—that women are to blame for the loss of white conservative political power through their desire to hold positions of power in a world they see as a man’s domain. American women don’t like this and they don’t like Mitt Romney no matter how many times Ann Romney begs for America to get to know her husband.

THE REAL DAMAGE OF OF TODD AKIN’S BELIEFS

[Journ.]

I’ve heard many times that politics is a very dangerous game. What you’ve got in America today isn’t really politics anymore it’s a bunch of kindergarten kids throwing their feces at each other and pointing. Americans need jobs and there are two sides who very likely have ideas of how to get corporations to get off their money and begin to hire people to do things but you won’t get to those solutions before election day because of issues that the Right feel are more important.

Abortion, sexuality and the struggle to get women out of the boardroom and back into the kitchen working to serve working men, these are legacy issues for the far Right and their enablers in powerful positions. Yes, I mean the Koch Brothers when I say powerful enablers and I clarify this because I don’t want anyone to think I misspoke. These people and those who share their beliefs are horrified that everyone else doesn’t see that they’ve got all the answers to a better life and a post life reward. Men like Todd Akin are appalled that their beliefs are things that have to be parsed and watered down as not to alienate those moderates and independents out there who get to vote.

Todd Akin is an educated man who got a degree in engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute and another in theology Covenant Theological Seminary in 1984 at the age of 37. This shows where this man’s thinking and loyalty lies. Akin is a man about processes and the solutions that can come from processes. He is also a man very devout about religion and devout about making his religion’s social norms prominent is American culture. Todd Akin is a well trained and well groomed officer for the Right in the culture war.

It would have been better for the GOP had Akin gotten out of the Missouri Senate race, but it wouldn’t change what I think is obvious but many in the MSM has missed. Todd Akin believes, because of his religous beliefs that life begins at conception– when egg meets sperm and the resulting new form divided and divides yet again. I am sure that Mr Akin understands how human beings procreate, however, he doesn’t know anything about being a woman anymore than I do. What’s missing is that Akin doesn’t have any compassion for people that goes beyond what his religious beliefs that color his stance on the issue of abortion–which simply put is a woman’s right to choose if she carries a fetus to term; he is simply tethered to the ground by the obsession of people like him to take America back to a time when the nation was more racially, sexually and socially more comfortable to them.

And by choosing not to excise this cancer from their body the group of people who are Republican are committing suicide politically. I feel that Akin’s views could have been betyter expressed by him had he said, “I do not support abortion under any circumstances save for a direct threat to the continued life and health of the mother.” Period. End of discussion. Next question. many sitting GOP members of Congress feel this way including Paul Ryan who is the Vice presidential choice of Mitt Romney. Had he said this we wouldn’t be talking about this today because that position is well known to be held by Akin, Ryan and dozens of others in the GOP and even some Democrats.

Abortion is an issue in this election cycle because it is the chief culture war issue for the GOP base. They can’t roll back the Civil Rights Act and despite their best efforts to control minority voting with new voter identification laws in several states, they can’t do away with the Voting Rights Act. Conservatives are doubling down yet again in their GOP party platform by echoing Todd Akin’s beliefs which are Paul Ryan’s beliefs that abortion in the case of rape or incest should not be legal. All eye rolling aside this is the dying gasp issue for the far Right in 2012. The Right knows that this might be the last hurrah for them and their ageing base. In the next 20 years the numbers of pro-life young people with deep motivations to organize like Gingi Edmonds for example will be in decline while the numbers of Latino and black teens who will be voting for the first time in 2032 will outnumber conservatives by a factor of 16 to 1. So the goal today with less than 80 days to go to the election is to win and gain control of the Congress and the White House and attempt to rewrite the laws to take America back to that place that is socially comfortable for conservatives once again.

In Hindsight

I’m a betting man. Back a few months ago I saw clearly that Mitt Romney because of the economic sluggishness in the US would likely win the presidential election. All the indicators were there and to me it seemed President Obama would not be able to get to 270 electoral votes no matter how I sliced and diced the numbers. In politics all you have to do is wait a while as I did in 2006 when I found myself writing a similar column about George Allen who was running for Senate and made the infamous “macaca” comment on a warm August afternoon. That gaffe six years ago almost to the day was the first of several shoes that dropped which showed the harshness and intolerance of conservatives to an electorate that was sick and tired of the war in Iraq. Now as the 2,000th life has been lost in the war in Afghanistan, the GOP has a full blown abortion obsessed rogue on it’s hands in Missouri that will cost them not only the Senate, the White House and possibly the House, but also will cost the Grand Old Party its very future existence. You hear it here first folks, the GOP will not exist as a national party in 20 years.

THE REPUBLICAN PARTY HATES WOMEN: TODD AKIN IS NOT FIT TO SERVE THE PEOPLE OF MISSOURI IN THE UNITED STATES SENATE

I know politicians are trained not to speak what’s really in their hearts so they don’t alienate certain blocs of voters in the coming elections. The problem with America today is two fold. First members of the US Congress are constantly running for office. Second, the average voter is terribly ill informed. This blog can nothing about the former but we can do something about the latter.

Yesterday on KTVI in an interview with Charles Jaco, Rep Todd Akin [R] MO-2 made the following statement about rape:

“Well you know, people always want to try to make that as one of those things, well how do you, how do you slice this particularly tough sort of ethical question. First of all, from what I understand from doctors, that’s really rare. If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down. But let’s assume that maybe that didn’t work or something. I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be on the rapist and not attacking the child.”

Here is the video from the Jaco Report:

As horrifying as Congressman Akin’s comment on “the fmeale body” having ways of “shutting down” conception due to rape are there is more to this statement from a man who loves his religion, of which he has no proof beyond his own belief, more than he cares for the rights of the female citizens of the State of Missouri. What I take from this is the pure lack of compassion for intelligent debate about an issue that has been in the forefront of American politics since Roe v Wade. The simple answer to this question from an intelligent person, one who was legitimately qualified to be a representative of the citizens of a state, would be “Yes, a woman who has been raped should be able to receive an abortion.” But this answer would not get you 97% ratings from the American Conbservative Union or a 100% rating from the Family Research Council. Once again old white men with arcane ideals are trying to “put women back in their place.”

I understand that Akin said these remarks were off the cuff and he has walked the comments back in a press release. That’s not enough, nor do I feel that this man who graduated from Covenant Theological Seminary in 1984 really made these remarks from anywhere near his cuff. These are his heartfelt beliefs based not on law but on his faith. Akin’s faith has no place in government when he uses it to force a victim of a crime to bear the burden of someone else’s violence to such an exponential degree as having to carry an unwanted pregnancy to term. Conservatives are always howling about living under the Constitution, however they choose when it suits them, much like how they buffet style the Bible, to live by separate rules that will assure them power over women, minorities, and the GLBTQ community. In this case they are sacrificing all women to their deity who in their eyes must see women as such a threat, and equally must see the decline in white births as such a threat, that they would openly go this far in trying to keep American women barefoot and pregnant even if that pregnancy was the result of force.

Conservative blogger Erick Erickson at Red Statehas tried this morning to make the statements of Todd Akin simply a “dumb statement” while pointing to lies told by the Right like the one by Rick Santorum during the GOP primaries that President Obama was in favor of infanticide. So even Erick Erickson is defending Todd Akin by attacking the President. What a house of mirrors politics has become in the US of A when a lie by a Republican running for office can be used to make the truth spoken by another Republican seem better. As if that’s not enough he even brings up Chappaquiddick to make his dog whistle even louder.

Jim Hoft at Gateway Pundit couldn’t even go near the issue of Akin’s comments depsite his 13th century Catholic views on abortion. He chose to make it clear how much Claire McCaskill is in favor of abortion. Hoft chose Whoopi Goldberg as his beard for Akin’s comments.

America you have a clear choice between Conservative Dominionism and Progressive Freedom and you have 81 days to decide. There can be in my mind no going back to the days of white power, or male hegemony and racial lines determining a child’s future or a woman’s reproductive rights. Be informed, be connected and be at the polls this November.

THE DAILY THEOCRACY FAIL: PASTOR JACK SCHAAP AND REVEREND PAT ROBERTSON

Posted in CHRISTIAN PERSECUTION IN AMERICA?, COUNTER-THEOCRACY, FUNDAMENTALISTS ACTING BADLY, PASTOR CHARLES PHELPS, PASTOR JACK SCHAAP, SARAH BLOCH OPINIONS, THE IGNORANT TENTH, THEOCRACY, TINA ANDERSON with tags , , , , , on 07/08/2012 by sarahbloch

Just when you think the far right religion addicted nuts in America couldn’t do anything more to make themselves look even more vile, of course, Murphy’s Law kicks in to full effect. You might recall the case of Tina Anderson who was raped by a member of a New Hamphire baptist church while a minor and shuttled off to another fundie family in Colorado so the cops would be none the wiser. This case invovled a number of people and shined once again a harsh light on Hyles-Anderson College where Pastor Charles Phelps, the religious authority at the centre of the Tina Anderson rape tragedy [Anderson was forced to apologize to her rapist in front of a gathering of congregants.] attended.

There must be something in the water at good old Hyles-Anderson because a number of their graduates have been caught in the web of scandal over the years. As it turns out the most recent Hyles-Anderson grad to fall from the pedestal of white conservative fundamentalist religious worship [ oh yes you people are worshipping number one your tribe and number two your pastor.] is Pastor Jack Schaap of First Baptist Church of Hammond. Now Pastor Jack committed one of the most cardinal of sins against his religion he is guilty of adultery. I know, gasp, big shock and all that. First Baptist did what any institution of bible thumping worth its salt would do and they fired him. What they weren’t concerned with was that the woman [and I use this term very loosely] he had the affair with was only sixteen years old. Pastor Jack is married with four adult chidren and is 54.

Here’s a bit more about Pastor Jack Schaap, taken from the Hyles-Anderson College website [before they scrub it clean]:

Pastor Chuck Surrett, Jack’s caring pastor during his teenage years, advised him to attend Pillsbury Baptist Bible College in Minnesota. This he did for a year and a half. However, after his first year of college, a new pastor named Jim Binney came to Bro. Schaap’s home church. Bro. Binney was a Hyles-Anderson College graduate and pointed Jack to Hyles-Anderson College. He followed the advice of his pastor and arrived at Hyles-Anderson College in January of 1977. Through some unusual experiences, he met and started dating Cindy Hyles about six weeks after his arrival. After two dates, both were convinced that they had found God’s will for their life’s mate. Brother Schaap graduated from college in May of 1978 with his bachelor’s degree in pastoral theology and received his master’s degree in May of 1979. On June 1, 1979, he and Cindy were married.

Jack Schaap began teaching Bible at Hyles-Anderson College the fall after he and Cindy were married. Five years later, he became an assistant to the president. He received an honorary doctorate from Hyles-Anderson College in 1994. Then, on June 4, 1996, Dr. Schaap became the vice president of Hyles-Anderson College. During his time at the college, Dr. Schaap traveled extensively across America and became known as one of America’s premier preachers, especially to teenagers. He was also a bus captain, starting with one bus and six riders. Under his leadership, the route grew to need six buses, seeing high days of over 350.

On March 7, 2001, following the death of his father-in-law and mentor, Dr. Jack Hyles, Dr. Schaap was voted in as pastor of the great First Baptist Church of Hammond, Indiana, with an overwhelming 96-percent vote in favor of his becoming pastor.

In the ten years that Pastor Schaap has been its pastor, the First Baptist Church of Hammond has seen amazing growth, with the average weekly attendance more than doubling. This growth caused the need for a new auditorium; so in March of 2005, the First Baptist Church moved into a new 7500-seat auditorium and, throughout that same year, saw over 25,000 converts baptized.

Also during his ten-year tenure as pastor, Pastor Schaap has led the First Baptist Church in starting many new ministries including the Chapel Ministry, Responsibility USA (a ministry to public school teens), Reformers Unanimous (an addiction program), and dozens of new adult Sunday school classes for a total of 74.

The First Baptist Church, under the leadership of Pastor Schaap, hosts three nationwide conferences each year—Pastors’ School in March, Youth Conference in July, and the Christian Womanhood Spectacular in October. In addition to these conferences, Pastor Schaap also travels to preach around the country. His lifelong interest in aviation that began when he earned his pilot’s license as a teenager has come to fruition as he flies to speak out of town.

Pastor Schaap superintends more than 3000 Christian young people in five different church-operated, private Christian schools. He is the chancellor of Hyles-Anderson College, a private Bible college operated by the First Baptist Church for the purpose of training preachers, missionaries, and Christian educators.

Pastor Schaap, who is known for his heart for world missions, oversees the operations of FBMI (Fundamental Baptist Missions International), which currently has 150 active missionaries. Since the inception of a Faith Promise Giving program, the church has seen its missions giving rise from $85,000 to a pledged $1.3 million for the 2010-2011 fiscal year.

A few years ago, the first mission team was sent from the First Baptist Church to an oppressive country. As of September 2011, this team has seen 18 churches planted, with 10,394 trusting Jesus Christ as their Saviour and 1,167 of them following in believer’s baptism. A second mission team, Team Ghana, was sent to Ghana, West Africa, in November of 2006. This team has seen 17 churches planted, with 467,596 people saved and 7,265 baptized. Hyles-Anderson College of West Africa was founded there in January of 2008. The college has graduated 38 students. In May of 2008, a third mission team, Team Thailand, was sent to Bangkok, Thailand. Since their arrival they have planted two churches, with 29,169 people saved and 1,593 baptized. In June of 2010, a fourth mission team, Team Indo-Philippines, went to the Philippines. So far they have planted the International Baptist Church with the International Baptist Bible Institute and seen 7,098 saved and 203 baptized. In October 2011 a fifth team is leaving to serve in a restricted Asian country. Some of this team will continue on deputation to leave for the field at a later date. This team will be starting a Bible college and training national pastors to multiply churches. A sixth mission team, Team Peru, is currently on deputation in preparation to go to Lima, Peru. A seventh team is currently preparing to serve in a Muslim country.

Pastor Schaap’s other passion is the starting of local churches. In addition to the churches being started by FBMI Team Missions, First Baptist Church has started several churches locally. The Chapel Ministry has two churches: one in Gary, Indiana, and one in South Holland, Illinois. In addition, 12 churches have been started under the name Chicago Baptist Church in various locations throughout Chicagoland, with plans to start a total of 100. Also, Pastor Schaap personally pastors a second church, First Baptist Church’s south campus—South Point Baptist Church—which was started recently in Crown Point, Indiana. The most recent churches to be started by First Baptist Church are 12 house churches within the city of Hammond as part of an outreach program called the Hammond Initiative.

Pastor and Mrs. Schaap have been married for 32 years and have two children, Jaclynn and Ken. Jaclynn is married to Todd Weber, Junior High Youth Director at First Baptist Church, and is one of the church pianists. The Webers have four children: Lyndsay, Raymond, Alexys, and Jayke. Ken is married to Candace (Hooker) and teaches at Hyles-Anderson College. They have two children: Kenny and Chloe.

Those who know Pastor Jack Schaap best would describe him as a man with a passion for God.

I’m sure the parade of defenders will come forward shortly since Pastor jack is was married to Cindy Hyles, the daughter of the founder of Hyles-Anderson College, Dr Jack Hyles. Or maybe they won’t. Still not convinced something’s fishy at the University of Child Rape, I mean, Hyles-Anderson College? Then I suggest you go here and read all the sordid history from a wonderful blog called Stuff Fundies Like.

For dessert today I have this bit of nonsense from Pat Robertson. The gaffe master of the religious right says that the shooting at the Sikh temple over the weekend was due to “atheists” because they “hate G-d.” I’m not kidding people. Go here and see for yourself.
