THE REAL QUESTION REGARDING SB5 IN TEXAS IS WHO ORDERED THE DATES TO BE CHANGED ON THE RECORD OF THE VOTE ON THE BILL?

That’s what’s being missed in this entire political whirlwind of a story.

I stand with Wendy

I have no intention of taking away from the Herculean efforts of Texas State Senator Wendy Davis who stood for nearly thirteen hours filibustering the bill on the floor of the Texas Senate. There just seems to be a loss of respect for procedural law when the GOP at any level is defending itself against being primaried by their ever more conservative base. This bill, which would have effectively closed 93% of abortion clinics in the state of Texas, had little to do with women’s health concerns as many of its proponents said. The bill was about assuring that the conservative base in Texas knew that the Republicans in the Senate and more pressingly Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst, had moved more to the Right on this issue.

Two things that I find alarming about this outcome. First, that the GOP staff in the Texas Senate tried to change the dates on the readout of when the vote was taken so that its passage would have occurred before the Special Session expired midnight today. Finally, I find that Lieutenant Governor Dewhurst acutally did the right thing and declared the vote moot. It does go to show you that the GOP when pressed by their more reactionary base into a corner where they might lose their privilege and power as an elected official in the second largest state in the Union will do just about anything to show the Know Nothings they are their allies. However, even in the face of this in the modern age when everyone is looking and the news cycle is long sometimes the good guys do win.

Qu’ul cuda praedex nihil!
