I hope I hear from Katie Pavlich directly today regarding the headline here. Her article about members of the reporting media needing to show two photo IDs to gain entry to Attorney General Eric Holder’s speech to the NAACP yesterday has become the number 1 article forwarded and posted on conservative blogs today. It is a beautiful gotcha hit piece that will have the Beck and Limbaugh crowd counting big points against the Liberals they loathe.

Ms Pavlich forgets that blogging isn’t a one way street. Her example while seeming to make it clear to anyone that valid photo IDs are needed everywhere in American society she forgets one very basic thing– the media are there doing a job not carrying out an unpaid civic duty. Now from what Katie Pavlich writes she seems to be in favor of paying every American voter who would now be required to get two photo IDs to vote a salary at least equal to her’s.

The average print journalist in the US makes about $19 per hour. The average time it takes to vote can vary from a few minutes to as much as three hours with high turnout. There will be nearly 200 million Americans eligible to vote in the 2012 presidential election. Okay, let’s do the math. If you pay a reasonable two hours, we have to consider time back and forth to the polling place and to work or back home, you are looking at $7.6 billion in cost EVERY FOUR YEARS and I am sure Ms Pavlich is willing to support the government picking up the tab.

It would eliminate the poll tax that AG Holder fears would be the result of requiring every voter to have a photo ID and it might even drive up the voter turnout numbers. Others would just take the money and not vote anyway ID or no. This is another case of apples and organes. Voting for President is a civic duty and not a constitutional right. However, there is the 15th amendment that protects minorities from being discriminated against on the basis of race. In the upcoming election you have two possible outcomes. One, you can allow everyone to vote as you have been for decades with allowances for new technology [those butterfly ballots really needed to go]. Or, two, you can make new laws that are designed specifically to disenfranchise the poor and those of color because you know that if a few percentage points of this group can be kept from voting the Right has a better chance at sending America back to the glory days of the Jim Crow Era.

THE SLIPPERY SLOPE OF EXECUTIVE PRIVILEGE

Posted in 2012 US ELECTION, AMERICAN EXCEPTIONALISM, CAVALOR EPTHITH EDITORIALS, CONSERVATIVE NEWS, FAST & FURIOUS, POLITICS, PRESIDENT OBAMA with tags , , , , on 20/06/2012 by Cavalor Epthith, Esquire, D.S.V.J

I have not paid very much attention to the entire Operation Fast & Furious gunwalking scandal that has been going on for what seems like a decade. This issue as I saw it was nothing more than a scratching post for the claws of conservative blog readers. Though it is a tragedy of incompetence for Attorney general Eric Holder, a favorite target of conservatives, until this morning I did not see this case as a matter that could bring down a presidency.

President Obama’s decision to invoke executive privilege in the case of documents AG Holder does not wish to submit to congressional review is at best a political blunder and at worst the tip of an iceberg of cover up. One invokes this privilege for only one of three reasons. First to protect the Executive branch from embarassment. Two, to protect the Executive Branch from civil or criminal action. And finally, three, to do both of the aforementioned things.

While I am certain that despite the outcome of the November elections in the United States Eric Holder will no longer be the AG in late January 2013 no observer of this administration with any reason could accept that this will be a permanent stain and a scandal that could gain traction within the MSM causing irreparable damage to Obama’s hopes for re-election.
