Theocracy, whether it comes in the form of a religion in the majority in your own land or attacks from foreign and unfamiliar shores is the greatest threat to democracy in America as well as to the prosperity and future advancement of the Human Race on Terra. Every day I read conservative blogs shouting from the barricades about Islam and the threat it poses to the “West” but rarely do I ever see any of these people who profess to be Christians coming to the aid of one of their own.
Chris Peterman was a good political science strudent at Bob Jones University and he was set to recieve his degree this past week. Over the past year however he got in trouble with the Bob Jones University administration. No, Chris wasn’t fornicating, drinking Bud Light in his dorm room or smoking the occasional joint. He hadn’t assaulted a female student or been caught holding hands or kissing a girl of another race or a guy of any race for that matter. Peterman simply reached out to victims of sexual abused and was committed to assuring that no one complicit in sexual abuse or its cover up should serve on the university’s board.
As it turns out, Dr. Chuck Phelps, the powerful pastor of the Colonial Hills Independent Fundamental Baptist Church in Indianapolis, Indiana was a member of the BJU Board of Directors. Phelps is also the chief accomplice in the cover up of the rape of 15 year old Tina Anderson by 38 year old Ernie Willis while both attended trinty Baptist Church in Concord, New Hampshire. To Peterman this did not sit very well with his values as a Christian because he knew that no man was above the laws handed down from the G-d of his faith. This wasn’t so much true to the leadership of Bob Jones University [emphasis mine.]:
When Peterman returned to BJU in January 2012 for his final semester, he claims he was called in for special weekly counseling with the Dean of Men. “I had questioned the authority of the university, so by association, I had questioned the authority of God himself,” he said. “Therefore, I had a deep spiritual problem he needed to fix.”
“I would go into these meetings, two to three times a week, for an hour or more at a time, sometimes even at midnight. He would have a printout of my Facebook, and have things highlighted and starred. If anyone appeared in the picture with me, he would have their names highlighted and their faces circled,” he said.
“I felt like I was being harassed and followed. … He would also call my friends in and question them about me, all in an effort to isolate me and shut me up.”
All of this because Chris had fought to have Dr Chuck Phelps removed from the BJU Board because of his actions to cover up for a wealthy paritioner who had raped a child in 1997. But isn’t this what theocrats, who are conservative by their nature, do? Now imagine having to live in an America where this sort of draconian ideology is mixed with the death fears of TEA Party activists trying to roll back 50 years of civil rights legislation. As our Boss cavalor would say, “That is a horrible brew indeed.”
