As I sit here in my home relaxing after a very nice brunch with Veronica, I can’t help but think about history. Not just any history but the history of my former nation the United States of America and how it has been intertwined with the history of this newspaper. In just sixty-one days The Dis Brimstone-Daily Pitchfork will celebrate its tenth anniversary as a progressive and hard hitting news blog. Our very first story in late August 2005 was about the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana and Cavalor Epthith [q c p n!] made it clear after the first week that this blog was a work in progress and that our mission was not to change the minds of people but to “simply make them think.”

Well, people are thinking, some of them hopefully many of the more than a million that have read these pages, are. Cavalor after the first year said he was willing to keep the digital version of the paper alive for five Terran years and in that last few months before the fifth anniversary he would review our efforts and decide if it should continue for another five years. After the election of President Barack Obama and all the reporting the staff had done on the failure of the Iraq War there was a feeling of certainty that the plug would not be pulled.

On 29 August 2010 Cavalor said, “We simply cannot stop now just when things are getting interesting.” Oh, how much more interesting things have gotten since that day. This month has seen tragedy in Charleston, South Carolina as nine black Christians were murdered by a white supremacist terrorist and triumph as the United States’ Supreme Court upheld Obamacare and decided that same sex couples have marriage rights in all fifty states of the Union. Despite conservative warnings that the nation would tear itself apart if either of these decisions came to pass it is business as usual from Washington to Los Angeles on this fine morning.

So as is in my nature I’ve taken my victory lap over these two decisions, said a quiet prayer to the Fates on behalf of the grieving families of the victims in Charleston and gone back to the work that I am tasked to do here– looking for threads in the reports of news from all over Terra. There is still much work to do and Cavalor knows this best of all. Just yesterday he brought the staff in for a meeting about what we will be doing here digitally for the 2016 election. “So we’re not shutting up shop in late August?” I asked smiling. “Not a chance,” he said, “things are just getting interesting.”

More impressions from the staff on five more years of The Dis Brimstone-Daily Pitchfork follow over the rest of your week end.

THE MEDITATORS SPEAK: ALLEN WEST NEEDS TO UNDERSTAND THE POWER OF WORDS

Posted in ALLEN WEST, AMERICAN EXCEPTIONALISM, FREEDOM, GLBTQ RIGHTS, LADY GAGA with tags , , , , on 05/07/2013 by Majordomo Pain

The Collective and The Meditators opine that words are powerful engines of change in any Society. As an icon of American and global popular culture on Terra, Lady Gaga is fully aware of the power of Free Speech and tapped into that power at a New York City Gay Pride rally on 30 June 2013. Toward the end of her rendition of the United States’ National Anthem, Lady Gaga changed the words of the last stanza from the the “home of the brave” to the “home of the gays.”

The Republican former member of the House of Representatives had this as a response which is more telling that the artistic license taken by Lady Gaga:

“Having served in the US Army for 22 years alongside some very brave men and women, I find Lady Gaga’s defiling of our National Anthem reprehensible. We are the land of the free because America has always been the home of the brave from Lexington and Concord to Kandahar. This young lady should be taken to Ft. McHenry and given a history lesson as to why Francis Scott Key wrote those words incredible words. In this week where we remember the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg and the 237th anniversary of our Independence is further evidence of the level of ignorance and disrespect some have for our national character. She and all those who cheered her abomination should be ashamed and apologize to every serving and retired member of our Armed Services. But perhaps I ask too much…”

To begin Lady Gaga does not owe anyone an apology for this appeal to civil rights for the LGBTQ community in the United States; We, Ourselves of The Collective and The Meditators do feel that the former congressman asks too much. We opine that Allen West should cease his reverence for war and embrace the struggle for the freedom of people to pursue happiness which is also to be celebrated on American Independence Day. Lady Gaga in her rendition of the Star Spangled Banner was neither ignorant of history, nor was she disrespectful of those who have fought and died for freedom. It appears that West feels that those that died in Gettysburg would feel that only certain people were the inheritors of the victory earned by the shedding of that blood while failing to understand that the Union soldiers who died to bring an end to slavery were fighting for the rights of his own ancestors to be equal partners in the America Experience. America has been the home of the gay since 1776 and would be known to have been had there not been the same manner of intolerance inspired by conservative religion based values that have no place in government then as he holds. To use the word “reprehensible” [bringing or deserving severe rebuke] bears out the disdain West has for anyone who does not fit into his worldview which is based on intolerance not only for members of the LGBTQ community but for Human Rights in general as his military record at the end of his career shows clearly.
