COCO AUSTIN THURSDAY: PUTTING YOUR POLITICAL CARDS ON THE TABLE

Most of you who read my articles know that I am a Progressive. The question posed by The majordomo this morning was exactly the one I’ve been asking conservatives all over Hell for the last 9 days. If ObamaCare is busted and won’t work, why are you guys trying to defund it? The clearest answer is the right is fearful that ObamaCare will work and come to be applauded as President Obama’s signature accomplishment in the future. Couple this with the facts that the base of the GOP is literally dying right out from under them and you have a perfect fetid swamp that can grow all manner of political crazies from Rand Paul to Ted Cruz to Michele Bachmann. End times? Really?

Coco Austin (9)

I feel it’s high time to do what Coco is doing up there and put all the cards on the table. First, the GOP needs to grow up and realize that ObamaCare is the law of the land. Second, the administration needs to get someone, anyone to fix what’s wrong with the ObamaCare website and do that soon rather than later. But for the government shutdown this would have been the lead story for the past nine days. If it was possible for a political party to shoot themselves in the foot after shooting themselves in the head this is it. The terror of a few Congressmen being primaried caused the GOP to blow what should have been its biggest political public relations victory in decades. Now Boehner is trapped and likely won’t make it ti 2014 as Speaker. With 2016 looming right around the corner it would take aliens landing on Terra for there to be a GOP majority in both houses of Congress and a GOP president in the White House. Maybe they need to take that 2012 autopsy out and read it again.

The Washington Post is reporting GOP Representative Michele Bachmann is under investigation by the Office of Congressional Ethics for allegedly misusing campaign funds during the 2012 election cycle. Bachmann’s campaign is accused of misappropriating House race political action committee funds [MichelePAC] to finance her failed run for President.

CHARLES BLOW EXPLAINS HALF OF THE STORY

Posted in 2012 US ELECTION, 2014 ELECTIONS, 2016 ELECTIONS, CONSERVATIVE FEAR, CONSERVATIVE HYPOCRISY with tags , , , , on 23/03/2013 by sarahbloch

Charles Blow wrote in The New York Times yesterday about the problem posed by misinformation machines like Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota. Bachmann is a symptom of the disease the GOP is suffering from post a second thumping defeat in a presidential election. Blow, via the Pew Research Center’s Andrew Kohut, is spot on in his analysis that the GOP today is in the same place the Democrats were in back in 1973:

Andrew Kohut, the founding director of the Pew Research Center, pointed out in The Washington Post on Friday that the party’s ratings “now stand at a 20-year low,” and that is in part because “the outsize influence of hard-line elements in the party base is doing to the G.O.P. what supporters of Gene McCarthy and George McGovern did to the Democratic Party in the late 1960s and early 1970s — radicalizing its image and standing in the way of its revitalization.”

This was the quote that tied the Blow piece together for me, but it doesn’t come close to scratching the surface of a solution set to the GOP’s problem with those who have driven drunk on ideological purity past the exit for Conservatism, ignored the road washed out signs and are heading on the long journey toward political illegitimacy in a car called Reactionary. The quote from the Kohut article in the Washington Post that rings truest was that the Democrats in 1973 were branded as the party of “acid, abortion and amnesty.” Now the GOP has been, by its insistence on demagoguery over details and purity of ideology over the people and their needs, has become, to many Americans the party of “Religion, rifles and returning to the 1950s.”Someone call the alliteration police, please.

The solution for the GOP is the same solution the Democrats used to win in 1976. They found an honest man who could hold the place in the White House for four years. But for the economy and foreign policy failure in Iran James Earl Carter Jr would have been a two term president. Carter may be forgotten as a president in one hundred years or so cast into the same bin of “oh those guys” where Millard Fillmore and James Garfield reside, but he really shouldn’t be. Carter, being a Southern governor forced the GOP into an alliance that was backward looking rather than forward thinking. To get the White House back and to appear more appealing to the conservatives still feeling stung by the crimes of Richard Nixon the GOP establishment made what is the closest thing politically to making a deal with the Devil– they got in bed with fundamentalism in the form of the Moral Majority.

Unbeknownst to conservatives at the time The Moral Majority was literally the very last gasp of power for the Christian Right in America despite Falwell’s famous quote as the organization disbanded in 1989:

“Our goal has been achieved . . . The religious right is solidly in place and . . . religious conservatives in America are now in for the duration.”

Governor Chris Christie

What the GOP needs now is what Carter gave the Democrats in 1976, a foothold in the backyard of the opposition. The Right cannot continue to become more and more reactionary nor can they copycat history by running a black candidate for the sake of the “we’re inclusive!” award for 2016. The GOP needs an urban and urbane leader for the Northeast and that man is New Jersey Govern or Chris Christie. For the GOP to nominate anyone other than Christie might be that last effort to give the Grand Old Party a defibrillator jolt back to life–even if Christie is a one term president due to circumstances beyond his control. There will have to be a genuine outreach to blacks and Latinos and the GLBTQ community for there ever to be a GOP president elected. I even have doubts if Governor Christie could beat Clinton or even Biden in 2016. But I’ll end with the same question that the Carter campaign asked the American people in 1976, “America, why not the best?”

BACHMANN FUCKED IN IOWA; PERRY, GINGRICH LIMP TOWARD DIXIE

Posted in 2012 GOP PRIMARIES, 2012 US ELECTION, GOP MELTDOWN, IN HINDSIGHT, MICHELE BACHMANN, POLITICS with tags , , , , on 04/01/2012 by Fredrick Schwartz, D.S.V.J., O.Q.H. [Journ.]

I’ve been holding that headline for a long time now and I finally get to use it.

After coming [pardon the pun] in sixth place last night the first darling of the TEA Party among conservatives in the 2012 run for the GOP nomination is done. Sources close to the campaign of Minnesota Representative Michele Bachmann have told me that the campaign is “dead and waiting for the undertaker to arrive.” Today four of Bachmann’s top campaign aides will join trhe staffs of Ron Paul or Rick Santorum effectively ending the TEA Party’s short term grip on the GOP.

The clear winners in the Iowa Caucuses last night were Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum who trailed Mitt Romney by only a handful of votes and of course President Barack Obama who can see a clearer rift in the GOP electorate by this result. Ron Paul finished third as was expected. Newt Gingrich who two weeks ago could be seen by many pundits winning Iowa and surging toward South Carolina was a distant fourth.

Texas Governor Rick Perry is also expected to end his run possibly beofre the New Hampshire primary next week. Perry finished fifth ahead of Bachmann. Both will skip New Hampshire and focus their final efforts on South Carolina where their anti-Obama rhetoric is better received than in Mitt Romney’s backyard of New England. The wear and tear on the Santorum campiagn will be felt in the Granite State as well as his staff fear losing momentum heading toward a difficult task of convincing Southern conservatives that a Pennsylvania Catholic is a better choice for the GOP than a Yankee Mormon. Ron Paul and Newt Gingrich will be the beneficiaries of right wing religious bigotry in South Carolina which holds its primary on 21 January 2012. Santorum is currently polling in the single digits in the Palmetto State.

In Hindsight

Could anyone see Bachmann, the queen of TEA Party bigotry and ignorance, going beyond New Hampshire???
