The talking points of conservatives way down the chain from the power elite come from a wide variety of sources. Quite often it is simply water cooler talk in the shop or in the office. “Hey did you hear what Rush said yesterday?” That sort of thing. Often it is from El Rushbo himself or some of the large number of AM radio right wing ideology hucksters. Others get their ideological marching orders daily from blogs and conservative screed sheets like WorldNetDaily, NewsBusters and CNSNews. Some are even more reactionary and bigoted seeking out websites that pander to the notions of white supremacy like Vanguard, Stormfront and Stuff Black People Don’t Like.

This tale of conservative hypocrisy begins with that famous moment when Sarah Palin at CPAC looked away from her TelePrompTer for a moment and reached for a Super Big Gulp, took a sip and said, “Bloomberg is not around, our Big Gulps are safe. We’re cool. Shoot, it’s just pop with low-cal ice-cubes in it.” This one one seminal moments at CPAC for Neocon1 who made note of it in comments at Blogs4Victory:

The reference is to New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s failed effort to have sugary soft drinks limited in size to 16 ounces or less in the city. What Palin is seen above hoisting in a Super Big Gulp from 7 Eleven which can be as large as 64 ounces. As she says “40 ounces of pop with low calorie ice cubes” is nothing right? Wrong. Look at it this way and average sugary carbonated soda contains 140 calories per 12 ounce serving. A Super Big Gulp like the one Palin brandished at CPAC is a 40 ounce drink and contains 466 calories or about 33% of what one should consume all day. A 2010 RAND Corporation study details the harm of the average rate of consumption of such beverages and that targeting them is a better method of decreasing obesity in America than even promoting exercise. This Harvard School of Public Health study shows even more alarming facts about how sugary drinks contribute to the decline in health for Americans.

If those numbers aren’t alarming enough, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have estimated that the cost of medical obesity in the United States is was staggering $147 billion dollars [<delh! 78 739 630 d 108 s.76]* in 2009 with the Harvard study estimating it at $190 billion [h!110 772 311 d 94 s.32] in 2012. Neocon! and many other conservatives supported Palin in her little deadly joke but are up in arms about another CDC statistic recently published. This one noted the cost and prevalence of sexually transmitted infections [STIs] in the United States. Neocon1 points out, as virtually every conservative blog did that the cost of treatment for as Neocon1 called them “preventable disease” is $6 billion per year just for those between the ages of 15 and 24:

all

CONTEXT: Each year, millions of U.S. youth acquire sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Estimates of the economic burden of STDs can help to quantify the impact of STDs on the nation’s youth and on the payers of the cost of their medical care.

METHODS: We synthesized the existing literature on STD costs to estimate the lifetime medical cost per case of eight major STDs—HIV, human papillomavirus (HPV), genital herpes simplex virus type 2, hepatitis B, chlamydia, gonorrhea, trichomoniasis and syphilis. We then estimated the total burden of disease by multiplying these cost-per-case estimates by the approximate number of new cases of STDs acquired by youth aged 15-24.

RESULTS: The total estimated burden of the nine million new cases of these STDs that occurred among 15-24-year-olds in 2000 was $6.5 billion (in year 2000 dollars). Viral STDs accounted for 94% of the total burden ($6.2 billion), and nonviral STDs accounted for 6% of the total burden ($0.4 billion). HIV and HPV were by far the most costly STDs in terms of total estimated direct medical costs, accounting for 90% of the total burden ($5.9 billion).

CONCLUSIONS: The large number of infections acquired by persons aged 15-24 and the high cost per case of viral STDs, particularly HIV, create a substantial economic burden.

SIX and a half BILLION a YEAR and that is only considering 15-24 yo’s

“Substantial economic burden” he says. And here is my problem. Obesity is totally preventable as well and costs Americans 31 times what STIs do. Both are subjects that should alert anyone who calls themselves a fiscal conservative to action. However, since conservatives are seemingly obsessed with putting the djinni of sex back into its golden bottle this issue, albeit a serious public health concern, at the forefront of their political discussion for political reasons while mocking the efforts of Mayor Bloomberg and those who support him like MSNBC’s Morning Joe host Mika Brzezinski. The conservatives bray about the costs of STIs but these are the same people who say that age appropriate sex education is a waste of time and only abstinence will work to curb both this public health issue but the issue of teenage pregnancy.

For the record based on the most recent CDC guidance the number of obese persons in the United states is 112,067,312 or 35.7% of the current population and costing $1,695.41 [h! 0 d 363 s.25] per year to treat for a wide variety of obesity related illnesses. Sarah Palin famously intoned the phrase “death panels” in relation to what ObamaCare was going to do to the US medical care system if it wasn’t repealed. In reality, what Palin did at CPAC, trumpeting the “right” that Americans have to guzzle sugary drinks at the peril of their own bodies, is far more likely to lead to illness and death.
