DAWN PATROL; 32 SHATTER 2 AS: CHINA, RUSSIA SAY NO TO WESTERN INTERVENTION IN SYRIA, WISCONSIN RECALL DEFEAT SEEN AS MAJOR POLITICAL SETBACK FOR BIG LABOUR

Russia and China are seeking a Syrian non-intervention agreement among Central Asian nations at a summit in Beijing, China. Both superpowers are trading and military partners of Bashar al-Assad’s Damascus government which has been brutalizing its civilian population since a pro-democracy uprising began fifteen months ago. The agreement of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization insists that the fighting and “all violence” must come to an end but warns that it is opposed to a forced transfer of power and military intervention. Western nations led by the United States of America, Great Britain and France have strongly condemned the Assad regime for the wholesale slaughter of more than 15,000 civilians in the past year alone.

Conservatives are still celebrating the victory of Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker in Tuesday’s recall election. The GOP which suffered a run of setbacks in US politics from 2006 to 2010 now feels they have the momentun to retrun to power in both state and federal government despite its association with the far Right TEA Party Movement. Several candidates for federal office enjoy TEA Party support but only a handful of them appear set to win general elections. Mainstream GOP feelings about the TEA Party remain mixed at best due to a fear their hardline stances on social issues will drive moderates away. Unions, especially government employee unions, see the loss of the Democrats in Wisconsin as a rallying cry to reelect President Barack H Obama in November 2012. One union organizer was quoted as saying, “Win or lose [in Wisconsin] what we learn in Wisconsin will change how we organize for the President in the coming months. This kind of trial run is worth its weight in gold.”
